Thinking about getting this game...
Only thing that’s stopped me is the sort of hefty price tag. Is it worth it? I currently play squad and post scriptum when it comes to first person shooters. The reason I’m almost ready for this is because I just played bf1 for the first time and I nearly gagged before turning it off mid mission after the prologue mission. I like realism and want a more genuine experience. Am I going to get that here. Also is it only multiplayer and what are the server sizes? I think this would be really cool if the maps were full of NPCs as well.

IMO,it is. Maybe waiting a sale is more interesting.
Yes,it is multiplayer only and each battle haves at max 32 players. Also, there are no private servers, rather large regional ones (US,EU,AU,Asian...) Until now,it haves no bots, unlike Tannenberg, but you can find fairly populated servers.
Also, worth noticing that Verdun gameplay haves two main differences from other games alike.
Maps are long, thinner and divided in sectors which you must attack in order, and after capturing one,you must defend it to then attack the next sector. Second thing is that the teams are divided into specialized squads types, and you can for example see two, three or even four different armies at the same team (like brits, french, belgians, americans).

Just as a warning the game has so many bugs not even an exterminator would want to touch the game with a stick. The game is also at its all time lowest because of its terribly buggy state and poor optimization. So be warned about such things.

They game has a huge skill curve due to the devs literally throwing you into the deep end right off the bat with no knowledge of anything and forcing you to literally defend for yourself. Now if you can push yourself past the huge skill curve than you get opened up to a whole new world of glorious jumpshooting and heavy artillery barrages.

So yeah you’ve been warned
This game is not realistic

It's game mode is but because of the engine and mechanics it's not as realistic as you think it is

There will always be exploitable bugs, no matter the game

if you like realism don't bother
game plays like a Call of duty, you'd be wasting time and money into a game that wouldn't offer what you expect, if you like more realistic things just buy day of infamy and download the screaming steel mod

Honestly, no - you shouldn't get it. Like Duck and Oathsworn say above, its shooting and movement mechanics are anything but realistic.

I haven’t played insurgency. I play squad though. Mostly total war.

Best WW1 game I have played but the community seems dead with no one playing it anymore.

You may have spoken too soon the ANZACs are most definitely the new squad
Anyone know when this game would be on sale?
The next big sale is probably the holiday sale in terms of steam

I got it with 6 other games for $6.47 in the "best of 2017" Humble Bundle. If you can patiently wait until Christmas Steam Sale (maybe Black Friday sale too), or until January's Humble sale(s) you'll get it for pretty cheap then.
I can wait. This looks like a great game don't get me wrong, just had many bills to pay these days sigh.
