We never found out why he got his tongue cut out.
some in Verdun x64 know this story:
in the early 1980s, my grandmother was very old and her mind was deteriorating. on a family trip to see her, i personally saw her blankly staring at a wall when for no apparent reason she suddenly said to the wall, "Pete, you big galloot."
that great uncle of mine was named Peter.
perhaps in some small strange way only she understood, my grandmother in the early 1980s a few months before her own death was having a "little visit" with her only brother who was killed in 1918.
The other had fought in the Boer War and re-enlisted for WW1 with the Royal Engineers. He served from 1915 onwards, and got the MM. At one point he was wounded and dropped off at a house beloning to some French people. A young girl treated him, and he ended up marrying her before the war ended. She was my great-grandmother.
Last of them was only following of retreating German forces. Sojuz Sovietskih Sotsialetskih Resbulik made finnish to do it. Germans burned every last bridge, house, cottage, storehouse, church and every other buildings in Lapland.
But my family members didnt fought in Lapin sota, but they defended our homeland and whole Scandinavia from spreading plague of bolshevism in talvi-and jatkosota like every other finnish men in 1939-1944. My greatgranduncle killed in late summer of 1941 in Ladoga Karelia.
91 000 finnish men killed in World War 2, and we honor their sacrifice for our 100-year old Suomi.
Tomorrow is a ultimate great day, Finland have its 100th independence day. Because of it I wrought this. For honor to fallen heroes buried to enemy soil! Suami sata vuatta huamenna.
My great great uncle was killed on the forgotten Salonika front he was stationed near Lake Dorian between 1915-17 before his death by Jasta 3 (German squadron). So you're great grandfather was Russian?
2 of my greatgrandfathers served on Saloniki Front (earlier in Serbia at the begining of the war at western border versus AH empire) and one of my greatgreatgrandfather gave his life as officer in defence of Belgrade as a part of Iron Regiment under the command of our famous Dragutin Gavrilović. (Trivia: If anyone listens to Sabaton they sang about it in Last Dying Breath)
No, he was bulgarian, as I am :) So he fought the russians and romanians in Dobrudja, and the english, french and colonial soldiers in Salonika and Doiran. Can you imagine, our ancestors were stationed at the same place (at least at a similar place) one century ago. And now, a hundred years later, we play a game about this war and comment those people. Funny world.
Yes I was thinking the same morski5. I wrote a story on my ancestor a while back in Verdun forums. The man beside him is a bulgarian soldier. I have another photo of 50 bulgarian soldiers at his burial. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=767416176
Thank you for this info. Very interesting story, and I have to say, that you are a lucky man to have the chance to know this in details. War records in Britain and Germany are way better, compare to those in Bulgaria. Sorry for your family loss. It was a time for real man and a lot from all sides paid the ultimate price.
The photo with the soldier next to the body of your great uncle - At first I thought it is a german soldier. Now I see that it is a bulgarian. If it is ok for you, can you share a link from the other photo from the actual burial? There is a website - Lost Bulgaria, with all kinds of old photos regarding our history. This link is for the decade 1910-1920. You can find a lot of interesting photos from the war period - http://www.lostbulgaria.com/index.php?cat=3 . It might be interesting for you. Unfortunately, the description under the photos is in bulgarian, but if you ever take the time to look at them, I can easily translate. Cheers!
He did not tell much but later he become moe a communist than a Hitler fan which he called only austrian big mouth corporal !!
He said the most time they hide, snipe or observe. On 1 occasian he was involved in a attack with stormtroopers and was glad to get back in the trench after he was wounded.
Never saw a tank he said but artillery was sometimes day and night and many of them become deaf. Un fortunately Verdun and Battlefield do not give enough attention to the real things.
I would like to have a realism mode were every bullet, evrey grenade, every shell can hurt every human and where you have to decide which is friendly or not without markings over the guys .
And i would like to see a death is a death or muuch ,onger respawn times so players would act muuuch more like in reality ;-)
