Templars Mod for The Forest (DOES NOT WORK WITH CURRENT VERSION)
So I have decided to try my hand at modding The Forest again! I get soo many requests every single day I just can't take it anymore LOL

Because Im not really playing the game much at the moment, and the game has changes SO MUCH code-wise since I last modded, I need people to try things out for me

Unzip into The Forest folder, it will replace 1 file (to revert your game, use Steams Local Verification)

Mod Contents - AI :
FOV reduced to 90 degrees
very-close distance reduced to 20m
Aggressive Combat more varied
Standard Combat more varied and more likely to break off
Defensive Combat more likely to break off, more likely to attack from flanks
Daytime Searching further, and remember player longer
Daytime Stalking from further away, more likely to use trees
Default Stalking from further away, more likely to back off and to use trees
Less Mutants on the first few days, many more after a week
Possible to get more Vags and Armsy above ground at any time

Mod Contents - Building :
Creative mode (currently always on, and currently doesn't remove the required items from the hud)


If you feel up to it. Test it. tell me if things are still working as expected.

What else do people REALLY want in a mod? Please keep in mind that some of the features of the mod previously were so complicated I am not going to bother with those again (like all the graphical modification keys, and the changes to the phone)

Also, currently there is no marking on the menu to tell you the mod is installed. that will come later

Day 1:
Found an abandoned camp.
Begin to break briefcases
See 2 guys and a female right next to me.
Swing my axe and also do the shield/block thing
They don't run away.
Run at em.
Female charges at me and attacks me.
I run away, female chases me down the beach and I kill her.
Get killed some time later by tribesmen.

Seems like survival games add eating as an activity due to lacking other content. I mean in real life if you are drinking water every day then you can go weeks without food. You wouldn't have much energy but you could survive and function. I think one solid meal a day in this condition if drinking lots of water would be enough for an active character. Some games are worse as even in the Army I didn't eat 20 cans of food in a day and a lizard with some berries seems like a good days worth easy. Cool mod though, just my 2 cents:)

OK, here is a test for you to try. I havent updated the OP with it yet as I want some feedback.

Fullness drains by about the morning after the crash or roughly 20 hours in game.
Energy drains slower when idle, but drains more when using axes etc
Stamina regenerates a little slower
Food gives much less fullness and energy, favoring cooked fish and rabbit/lizard. Berries and Mushrooms have more impact due to the above changes
Soda drains some fullness
Drinking from water sources give you stamina
Swinging the axe or running should keep you warm


I also made some tweaks :
found a typo and fixed it in female mutant behavior in relation to health
getting burnt by fire is more dangerous but lasts a short period, and cannibals set to match
Increased fear on the first day alot and the second a little

I gotta say, it feels much better for the survival aspect. You don't have to worry about eating much, but if you let yourself get quite hungry, you will need to find a good amount of food to fill you up!

Hey Templar, any luck increasing the light coming off molotov flames, effectively turning them into fear bombs?
speaking of fire I do kinda wish we could take off our gasoline boots because I've walked through fire in real life and didn't catch on fire, this guy steps on a wet unlit match while he's also soaking wet while also in five feet of snow and all of a sudden it's a volcano how even


I'm literally gonna build log holders around my fires as bumpers because video games

(I haven't tried the update I just saw more damage from flame and my stomach sank as it's more dangerous to me than the cannibals, the rest looks fantastic though here I go omg)


ACTUALLY in real life if you put your foot on a campfire your body would most likely move your foot for you ya know, if anything fires should trip you up a bit and the fire pits with rocks you could even trip over it idk I kinda wanna just go on an island full of cannibals until this gets more updates




http://www.twitch.tv/steveyos/b/540536320 fire was my friend in this playthrough, I feel now it's like if this game had easy normal hard we'd be on normal, I 100% need a team mate so until there's co-op I can't be much help in terms of playing with actually setting up a base and such but this video shows that while you can't quite take the time to survey the entire area you can definitely survive much better than before, I'm also realllllllllllllly high and even with taking the time to always throw the tennis balls away when they'd make their way back to my damn camp I still ended on full hunger, though I almost died of hunger a lot but I still survived, then I figured out fishing, ugh this is so damn cool man lol THE FOREST

Not sure if this is the vision of the game or not but, I'd honestly like to be able to build a camp and survive in piece without having to be attacked every 5-10 mins. It'd be awesome for every often to see them spying on me or such, but they'd only attack my camp on certain occasions and maybe sometimes even have a massive attack/invasion (attack would also maybe depend on how large the camp is since they might have the feel that they'd need a large force to take me out). Then also they can attack or ambush me whenever I venture into the forest.

on the first day you should be able to get a 1x1 hut up with the basic walls. inside there place a shelter and a fire and then a fire or two by entrance. just stand in doorway and hold them and if things get to hairy jump onto your walls :)

Yeah but halfway through gathering my materials, (maybe 5 or 10 mins after place crash), they're already at my camp! I make them run away but they keep coming back. If I ignore em or keep at my defensive/aggressive post, they'll attack me.

FAQ
Q-Do you need to start a new game?
A-No, however I would highly recommend it, as the default AI will have setup a lot of effigies in your game already, giving them an advantage in finding you.

A-Unfortunately no, I will leave this to the developers

Q-Is this compatible with X mod?
A-Again unfortunately not. Mods of these type (assembly mods) cannot be merged together

Q-How can you fix the game when Endnight cannot?
A-I have not fixed anything in the game at all. I have modified the values of things in the game and all the bugs are still there, however you may see some less due to these changes.


Overview
Reworks survival for greater effect.
Increased food effect variations, including negative effects
Better melee combat
Big nerf on fire and flaregun. No longer kills outright (infinite ammo remains unfortunately)
Thicker, more overgrown forest that can be seen at greater distance
More progressive aggression and combat tactics by cannibals as time passes
Larger more thorough searching, with less "unfair" player finding tactics
Reworked suitcases and item spawning
Balanced wildlife to keep further away from player (animal AI is incomplete)
No more super-punch deaths or glitch launch deaths (falls no longer kill you however)




Details

Cannibal AI :
  • day time searching no longer cheats. quite attracted to buildings
  • Night time searching allowed to cheat a little. attracts more to you and makes it a little more intense.
  • Cannibals no longer killed by fire, but it still does a lot of damage
  • Search and roaming reconfigured to cover larger areas
  • More cannibals as time progresses
  • Cannibals start with a lot of fear, and little aggression, reversing over the course of 5 days
  • Use of trees to attack at night increased to help cannibals breach walls
  • Fleeing and regrouping tweaked for daytime
  • Maximum allowed attackers per day greatly increased

Animal AI :
  • Increased flee distances and movement speed to try and make them harder to catch (their AI is incredibly simple, not much I can do)
  • Despawn distance out to 150
  • Bird speed and noise reaction distances increased


Fire :
  • More likely to spread
  • Burns for longer (fire spread eg tree)

Combat :
  • Player damage increased a little
  • Cannibal damage UNCHANGED

Player :
  • Dropping a Molotov makes it just disappear
  • Can no longer take damage from velocity (extreme velocity will kill you, nothing can be done about that)
  • Run, Walk, Strafe and Swim rebalanced
  • Energy and Fullness drain tweaked
  • Cold effect increased
  • Health regenerates slowly to 15% instead of 5%

Survival :

  • Berries have differing effects
  • MUCH greater variation in the effects and benefits of mushrooms
  • Meds no longer fully heal
  • Meds are picked up unless your health is really low
  • Candy no longer heals a large amount of health
  • Soda gives less stamina
  • Booze gives MUCH less stamina
  • Cooked food give more heatlh
  • Suitcases harder to open
  • Randomly spawned items much rarer
  • Hunger can kill you

Graphics :
  • Tweaked level of detail distances a lot to increase the detail of the forest
  • Tweaked Grass scaling to make it taller
  • Tweaked grass density to make it thicker
  • Increase size variation of bushes and plants
  • Increased leaf grow speed and fade speed


1.4 Update
  • Mixed up mushrooms ALOT. find out for yourself what they do!
  • Rebalanced Energy so that it drains much slower, but takes more to fill.
  • Rebalanced all food "fullness" amounts to promote cooked meat and rare plants
  • Made cannibals more aware of you to their flanks when close. must sneak right behind them



Personal Comment
I think I've almost got it for 0.02. I really like the feel I get in game now. Its scary, its hard. but I don't feel like I have no hope. Survival mechanics feel quite different and being able to live off the right mushrooms helps you to keep going on long trips and better yet, distracts you as you look for them. Cannibals over the first few days will generally just harass you moderately unless you happen to lose all light at night time! They will get MUCH more aggressive towards you when your fires go out, however this only lasts a few days, then they will fight fire or not!

Of course the experience you get is still wildly varied. with unfinished AI that have nothing to do when your not around, sometimes you can go a long time without your first encounter. Usually however you are found either day one or night one.



Could this give me more FPS?

No, infact it may decrease your FPS by a handful as it thickens the forest

Thats a bit sad :/ im am happy atm, that i can run it almost smooth on lowest settings... I will skip this one, but still hang arround to see how it is evolving.

Version 1.5 released! I changed the name of the thread to better represent the mods new direction!


Big release that I just spend 3 days testing and tweaking that is based around the idea of surviving for many days. and balancing the Fullness, Health, Stamina and Energy accordingly to make it less tedious and more complex over longer periods of time. Food and Drink was re balanced accordingly so that more eating and drinking is required to regain fullness or energy. You will need to find and catch a few animals, and probably eat some berries or mushrooms to fill yourself completely up.

Cannibals have been further tweaked to make day one a very tense night with lots of activity, followed by a day of relative peace, before things again pick up. Combat and searching tweaked to reduce how often they bug out

The Flaregun has been nerfed and tennis balls don't get picked up, along with wiping your inventory when you load.



Oh, and have fun going to the boat
