Make as many molotovs as you can, there so OP when fighting the mutants.

A small tip, wait a few minutes before leaving the plane in the begnining, that will give the mutants a chance to leave the area a little bit before you leave the plane. I have only died one time out of 4 play throughs because I do this.
After you have left use your camp as a decoy and stay hidden during the night, they are much more active (the mutants).

Okay so atm the suitcases are exploitable. I have harvest the suitcases on the beach multiple times by walking away for abit. I then have lots of food bars and soda to survive on. Then make tons of molotovs!

Easy way to survive the 1st night: Go to the beach and find one of the giant rocks in the ocean. Built a platform right up against it, then build a wall In front of it, and on both sides. From there you can drop down from the rock and be in a little impenetrable area, because the mutants cant reach you. Finally, chuck molotovs like no tomorrow. WARNING: Killing multiple mutants can result in them dissappearing forever. Cause is unknown.

-Fire axe cant block unless you swing first then immediately hold RMB. This way nothing can hurt you at all. Just hold it and release when you have your chance. Or else hold block (RMB) and walk around a fireplace to make them die from walking in the fire.

-You can hit the beach sand with a stick to make stones and coins appear.

Here's one from me. it's rather obvious.

The mutants are not telepathic, they will not automatically know your location, they do not automatically know you exist, they have their own routines and do not automatically wake up and think "lets kill the player". However if mutants see you and survive, they will tell others. Therefore more will be aware. Fires will attract mutants. If you're trying to be stealthy and hide from them, I would suggest not having a fire lit at night as the mutants will wonder what the strange light is and go and investigate it. Then they will find you. Do your cooking in the day and have no fire lit at night. Also having an obvious base, for example a large one or one in an obvious location, will attract mutants. If they see a strange structure, like fire, they will go and investigate. Then, they will find you. Try taking the time to find good location to hide your base that wont attract the mutants. Also try moving to new locations every so often, locations that are hidden and not obvious.

Doing both of these have helped me keep reasonably hidden from the mutants.

Not sure if this is a good tip or maybe I am mistaken, but try to find the beach as soon as possible and try to set your camp there. There are no trees, so it will be easier to spot the mutants and there are less chances to get ambushed.

If you need wood just go to the nearest tree without entering the forest, so you won't be in extreme danger.

I agree - open space is good. Also molotovs are great for taking down mutants. Also good for hunting rabbits.

Lizard skin can be used as armour. Who knew?

My tactic is generally to run away if I see a mutant. Usually they will go to fetch their pals and by the time they've turned up you can have scarpered. If you're cornered into a fight, burn them.

From everything I have seen so far you can not craft the spear, the beach or small ponds/lakes seem to always have spears around.

Also use the spear to kill rabbits/lizards much easier then the axe.

I didn't figure this out until hour 5 but holding shift while running will make you run faster at the cost of stamina. You should be able to outrun an ambush if you are not cornered. Fire and molotovs are all you need to fend off the nightly attacks.

Make explosives with bottle, coins and Circuit board found on side of plane and in cave!
