If you like on-the-edge-of-your-seat action and horror, get Outlast.

If you like a deep, rich story, get Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

They are both great games depending how you look at them.

Oskraad is right. They are different. Outlast is good as game which makes you panic and scream like good horror movie. Amnesia: AMFP is good as game which makes you think and (maybe) reimagine your visions of things, unhurried and depressive as great thriller book. You should get both of them and never compare them.

I know, that would be pretty crazy to compare two games that are in the same genre.

As for the op, if you play A Machine for Pigs expecting a great story you will probably be disappointed. The story is only good in comparison to the lackluster gameplay. But its really not that great, the writing is mostly nonsensical metaphors, the supposed mysteries are really quite obvious, and the premise is laughably bad, its like a bad scifi movie. thats just my opinion, obviously some people think differently, or at least that's a rumor I've heard.

Outlast is probably a better choice.

Amnesia has a great scary Soundatmosphere and subtile Horror! Outlast has only ♥♥♥♥ing Jumpscares and Terror-Pursuits...

Easy break down of the two games.
Neither have much actual gameplay.
Amnesia had a truly haunting and frightening story that will keep you wondering and generally disturb you psyche. The music is also used in a way that I have not seen by many games thus far and really adds to the games overall ominous tone.
Outlast is kinda like Doom and many other horror games out there, meaning it relies entirely on "Boo!" scares rather than taking the route games like Amnesia, Silent Hill 2, and (To a extent) Alan Wake did. And that route is getting inside your head and making you feel very uneasy.
My opinion is my opinion. I've played both and Amnesia took the cake for me. Outlast was a dissapointment for me.

The first Amnesia is the best, it had the best of both worlds. Outlast, if you don't stop running then you'll kind of not really die anyways.

Outlast is like a shot of vodka and Amnesia: AMFP is more like a well aged bourbon. ;)
