The linear level design is especially disappointing, given that the originals had big open levels.
PLAY is the key word in GAMEPLAY.
Now with that said, research the game, read up about it, watch footage, and decide if you think it's a worthy purchase.
I have, but...With so many bad reviews I'd rather not waste money if it's not as good as it looks. Though most bad reviews seem to be saying that it's not the old Thief game.
People comparing it to Dishonored.
That's only two factors, there are plenty more if you take a look at the hub.

I'm definitely getting it.

-Repetitive
-Master theif stealing primarily candlesticks, pens, ashtrays, etc.
Great gameplay. It's fun to sneak about but that's about the only thing it has going for it.
I don't like it. The levels are quite linear, I found the stealth to be quite poor, in fault to the AI of the guards. The combat feels like poking someone gently with a stick until they finally fall over. Not to mention, it also consists of a good number of quick-time events, and I had problems where 1 guard would see me, I would take him out real quick, and I have EVERY OTHER GUARD running directly at me.
Let me say, I haven't played the older Theif games, and I played this on the PS4.
Overall, I wouldn't buy it, but this is all just MY opinion.
Remember that a lot of reviews seem to expect this game to play like Assassin's Creed for some reason. I see lots of complaints about how the game's not open world enough, how combat is hard, etc.
The game is not supposed to be a huge open world game. Though there is a LOT more open world aspects than all the previous Thief games put together. There's a huge city for you to explore. No, you can't scale every wall and run along every rooftop like AC, but then that's not the point. The game is about stealth and subtlety.
That's the issue with combat. Reviews bash the game for combat being difficult. They seem to miss the point. If you're in combat in Thief, then you have screwed up. Combat only should happen when things have gone horribly wrong. This isn't AC where you leap into a crowd of soldiers and start slaughtering. This is about STEALTH. You should NEVER be seen if you're doing it right. It's not like Deus Ex where you can choose a stealth approach or a combat approach. Stealth is the only "proper" approach. You should be able to get through the game without killing anyone for the most part. That's why they make combat so punishing.
Seriously I watched TB's WTF is thief and just bought it, it looks really amazing and I will be sad if this game doesn't do well because fanboys are being dumb (again)
Yes it has a few bugs involving crashes but I'm sure that will be fixed
What's sad is alot of people are actually believing the dumb fanboys who claim "its a mess don't buy it dur hur"
Far from it, they certainly took our feedback into consideration, no doubt about that and wow I am super excited!
AC is a terrible stealth game anyways, why on Earth would they want it to be like AC?
You realize that guards yell out when they see you, right? That's why all the rest come running. That's the point.
Combat is supposed to be a bad thing in the Thief games. So if things go bad, load and try to figure out how to get through properly.
