Begin backing up, carefully.
Line the targeting circle on your docking cam up with the glowing circle on the docking port. When they match the locking lever unlocks.
Flip lever and you're docked.
I don't think they really explain this well in-game. I docked like 50 times before I realized the circles had any significance.

What he said, it's very easy to dock even in precise mode.
Drive towards the dock, make sure you're centered on it if in precise mode and then do a 180 without going up or down, easy dock everytime, same principle with cargo.
if you're playing with easy docking then you don't need a tutorial.
