Download stops
The download of the update is stuck at 284mb/294mb and steam keeps writing to the disk for no reason. The problem is that steam is doing this only with hitman, the other downloads are normal. Is it only me or is this thing happening to someone else?

happened here too...
Code Blue Sep 6, 2016 @ 9:32am
Took me about 30-35 minutes for the game to upload, 10 minutes for preallocating and another 20-25 minutes to download the remaining 50mb from the patch... Watch a video or do something else in the meantime, it will resume the download on it's own.

Yeah, the download stopped at 237mb for me as well, it took a long time to download the rest, but it will finish eventually.

Same issue in another post:

It's not a problem per se, in the "bug" or "error" sense. It's a bandwidth problem—and not just YOUR bandwidth. The bandwidth allocation for the distributing servers is pretty damned wide, but…it's literally a global issue. A great many executable archives are being updated all over Earth. There are ways that the data traffic can get bottlenecked—but the delays are only temporary. It might stop—for a while—but, unless there's something wrong with your system that is not related to this application, the download WILL resume.

(AFAIK) Hitman's files are compressed. The system is opening those files (imagine just huge rar files), which takes time, and then it overwrites some of the files with the new ones and close it again, which, again, takes time. There's nothing wrong with this or your computer, this happenes to everyone becuase it IS designed this way. It can be annoying, but it initially saves few GB on your disk and makes the game load faster since it will load only the things it needs.

So, again - Steam downloads all the new files, opens big rar-like files, overwrited the old ones with the new ones and close the rar-like file.

Have lots of free space on your hdd or ssd... The decryption and decompression requires a ton of space. I wonder if it got to do with denuvo too since they had to protect their precious..

In my opinion this update is poorly implemented. It got stuck for me because it wanted more than 40GB of disk space and I had only 40GB free on the disk. It should be possible to install a 290MB update using less space than the entire game takes on disk. I have never had another steam game update this inefficiently.

Note that Honzas4400 and Rogue are speaking authoritatively, not responding in an ignorant knee-jerk reaction (emotional) way; they make arguments based upon actual knowledge and facts, indicating that they have knowledge of how these applications are written and maintained. The opinion of such individuals should carry far greater weight than someone that testily proposes an UNINFORMED opinion that actually displays a staggering DEARTH of expertise in such matters.

Being a player that only knows how to USE applications is NOT the same as being a player that knows how to DESIGN and WRITE applications. Ask yourself: Which kind of player, logically, should have a more credible, considered opinion?

Gremlin.Bitten, if your insulting post is aimed at me then you should know I was a software developer at Google for 5 years. Have you ever written any code? Are you trying to tell me that Hitman could not be updated without making an entire copy of the code first? If so, please explain why that is. Put up or shut up.
Jurassic Fart 2 Sep 6, 2016 @ 7:29pm
As a matter of fact, you dolt, YES, I have written code. I bloody TAUGHT coding at university. Now that you have identified yourself most adamantly as a troll, you'll get nothing more from me, no matter HOW stupid what you write is.

And besides: If you KNOW what you're talking about, then what I wrote was NOT directed at you, so why the gawdamned thin skin? Paranoid much? And here's the kicker: If you WERE a professional coder, then why did you not cite specific technical reasons for your opinion that would actually strengthen the validity of your opinion? That would make what you wrote BAITING.

This could end up being the curse of episodic games.

In order to keep folk that don't wait for the entire thing to come out interested in the game they have to release small extras. In hitmans case this is the elusive targets.

Downside is this means a lot of downloading of patches and the potential of a forced download that takes so long (gary busey was 10 gigs or thereabouts) that the window of playtime before the targets off the menu is miniscule.

Especially when the patching is wobbly and simply stops midway through.

Not that any of the online stuff works for me no matter how many hoops I've jumped through to get the game to simply connect.

Gremlin.Bitten. Saying "I did" isn't doing. I don't believe for a second that you taught anything. Your mannerisms are those of a child, not a teacher. I have seen you badgering people in 2 threads now that are just legitimately asking questions. And ironically your icon says "no trolls" when you are the only one in the threads behaving as such. Your post adds no information to either discussion so why are you posting other than to insult and troll? If you ever really were a teacher I feel for your poor browbeaten students that never learned a thing from you.

Since you aren't a developer you probably won't understand this. But to update without copying the whole game you do it in small chunks.

This game has been running just fine for me but now things are acting very weird during this (still stuck downloading) update issue.
I fired up Steam just a while ago and then it showed that Hitman wasn't installed which is weird because i can see the 40+ GBs files exist in the steam games foilder.
Now it is re-downloading some huge install files again.
I really wanted to catch some gameplay tonight. :steamsad:
