Can't get past first 'create save' screen

When the game starts, and it asks to create save, pressing 'A' gives a momentary glimpse of the next screen then it jumps back to 'create save' - and the 'A' button no longer does anything, leaving you stuck at that screen forever.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there a workaround?

I'm sure they expected nobody to buy it, that's what it does not work.
