The Russian Rank V coastals, SKR-1 and the even better SKR-7 are a different kind of thing though, absolute beasts, and both Pr.206 (which spawns together with smaller coastals) are very capable.
They all have very high RP costs, purchasing and putting them in crew slots is sometimes more expensive than for battleships (British tree HMCS Terra Nova, 780 000 SL purchase, British battleship Queen Mary 640 000 SL Purchase), and the grind, given that coastals generally hav a way shorter life span in a match, is long, very long.
You can perfectly do without them and just use destroyers as you mentioned. For me, and I primarily play naval, Rank V coastals are just collector vehicles, they're nice but no must-have.
Ideally, I'd like to see an additional inbetween spawn from Bluewater and Coastal for frigates and other ships of that ilk
If you want useful costal boats, I would at least grind up to the potent torpedo boats. I love U.S. torpedo boats and I bring them no matter my B.R, all the way to 7.0. You can capture and protect zones in a much faster and smaller boat, but still have guaranteed torpedoes which, as you mentioned, some frigates don't have. That way you aren't entirely useless at top tier, and can still have costal ships in your lineup.
This is just my perspective from playing with them at 7.0, at lower B.Rs PT boats obviously get wrecked by destroyers unless you play smart and catch them at chokepoints.
I'm waiting for Gaijin to add subs so I can use my sub-chasers lol.
Because different vessels have different roles and too many people just think bigger is better
For all the big boys staring through binoculars at enemies 10 to 15km away make big booms what they are not good for is completing objectives
The fastest thing to capture an objective is a coastal boat, you even see people in 1.0 reserve boats doing it. And they only get away with it because so few people seem to understand what’s going on
So take a top of the line coastal and win that small scale skirmish over the capture points at the start of the game. The battleships on your team serve as meat shields exchanging fire with all those enemy battlships so none of them have time for the dinky little boat behind the rocks
By the time any of the battleships even get close to the capture point the match is as good as over because they are too big and slow
And if you want to kill the coastals a destroyer is the next step up, I have lineups full of those I bring to top tier too. They might not reach the cap point as fast as coastals but they can still, get there before tickets bleed dry.
It’s all about bringing the right tools for the job, start with coastals, upgrade to destroyers. And let all the meatheads in the big boys thing they are achieving something
And it wouldn't be such a nonsense that Chidori, for instance, while being overall weaker than IJN Momi or IJN Mutsuki/Satsuki which are 1 br step lower, costs a fortune to repair should she be sunk, and the repair costs and time for the latter are barely noticeable. Same for Pr.50 frigates that can lose in a fight against destroyers a bit stronger than reserve ones (4.0 as well) thanks to having weak basic HE for 100mm guns compared to that of 120-130mm (not to mention those often have SAP as well). I was not impressed by the accuracy of Rosomakha guns when firing HE-VT against air (American 127mm are far more reliable in this regard), it's a much more difficult ship to use effectively in 3.0-5.0 range compared to 4.0 destroyers in any role but holding caps (being smaller helps with taking safe cover between torpedo reloads), but still, some people manage to play stock Karl Marx and Yenot and eventually spade those with rank 4 economy...what a torture must it be to spade USS Coulbaugh, Chidori and the British frigates with 114mm guns then? And how frustrating it is to pay 12-18k SL repair bills when your stronger opponents pay less than 1k SL or even repair for free.
Those ships should remain in the game of course, diversity is cool. But not the absurd economy part please. Otherwise, like it had been suggested, make them fight only against other coastals like apex predators without facing destroyers so that such costs are justified.
