I feel like the game is missing something, but I can't figure out what.
The controls are responsive, there's vibration, there are voices, the resolution is pretty good (although because I'm compelled to nitpick, the portraits are a little fuzzy), but for some reason, I feel like there's a flaw I can't quite put my finger on. Okay, so I'd rather be playing as a female protagonist, but that can't be it because I've played as men in games before and it didn't bother me. Maybe it's because the game reminds me so much of Demon Blade for Wii (I don't remember the exact title and I'm not sure it's Onimusha) so in the back of my mind I keep expecting a second playable character and the combat method where I just hold the attack button down and attack-rush in the directions I press. That's just a guess though. I'm not trying to troll and this isn't a bad game, but there's something about it that's driving me nuts, especially since I can't figure out what it is!!

I really like the game as well, but I do have two things that bother me: First, the attack strings are rather inconsequential (it doesn't really matter whether you pick one or the other) and second, the control scheme is a little "sticky", it's great for combat, but it wouldn't be a good fit if the platforming elements had been more difficult.

It's still a great game though, all games have their minor flaws, so it's not a dealbreaker.
hm cant speak for you, but while i like the gamemechanics and the story i just cant get into the characters really good. Maybe because they are looking like they are out of a Disney Movie and i just expect to see the Aristocats or Bambi around the corner. Thats a bit sad for me, because (like i said) i like the story itself and i think i could get really into it if the persons would at least look a bit darker and not so "cute" and fluffy. Dont know. Same is for the voice acting which in my opinion for some characters is just horrible. Not the acting but the type of voice used for some characters just add the happy candy world feeling to the game and so prevents to get me deeper into the world. Thats just my opinion, but a character with such a mysterious and bad past fighting for the good and also getting into situations where to talk about death and life and also burry dead dudes, should at least be in a fitting world and he just isnt. Today i was in that scene after defeating that Waterqueen holding back the Water for Mudcity (sorry i play in german so dont know the english names) and the scenes after that should be really sad but....they just werent. I listen to this cute voices of these little sweet people and just cant get into it.

For the reasons you listed, that was exactly my reaction while playing through that part too. I had no connection to the townsfolk at all, and got little emotional reaction out of the death sequence.

And I would also agree with your opinion on the voice-acting; a lot of NPC voices feel like they don't fit the character, and some dialogue feels like they were recorded in a parking lot. They basically just feel... off.

The protagonist is also a bit of a Marty-Stu[tvtropes.org] too, and seems to have virtually no personality flaws at all. It gets somewhat annoying after a while, with him always being ready with his quips & zingers, and generally being on top of all situations.

Not to sound like I am slighting the game or the developer -- I'm having a great experience thus far -- but these elements do drag me out of the experience a bit. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way, and hopefully we'll see Noogy try to address these issues in his next game.
The game is holding little surprises. It's a nice-looking, decently lengthed and fluidly working title but the least it tries is to reinvent the wheel. The background story is seen often (mysterious hero with no memories helping some rebellion fight some evil force) and the combat provides no depth (I didn't see any; Fidget at some point made fun of button smash tactics, but that's actually all you can and need to do in this game; I played it on normal only though, it might be different on tough and hardcore difficulty).

I don't share your opinions regarding the voice acting. I thought it was very good. I don't remember any character that made me think "wtf is that?!" or any of that. On the contrary some I actually looked up once in a while only to hear them again (Haley, that sister of Corbin, Avgstin). I liked some of them having accents too, giving them slightly more personality and individuality. But maybe I've seen just enough worse voice acting especially in games you can't play in their default language.

Every character was unique. Not worked out too much, but enough to make the world kind of believable and enjoyable. The furry thing didn't disturb me. But then again all persons in this game could have been very well humans I guess. I don't know why the creator made it furry. Maybe to fit the overall cartoonish look of the game? To keep the ESRB rating low? Or just for the sake of having something different to the rather serious, darkly toned games of this genre like Devil May Cry, Gods of War or Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I once glanced at his website, and it seems this Elysian thing is a "franchise" of him. Anyway, it doesn't hurt if you ask me.

*********** SPOILERS ***********

The game was dangerously close to getting cheesy at times (you discovering your identity, doubting it, the doubts of Fidget, the death of that Mudpot citizen, the boss fight, Dust dieing), but luckily it didn't dwell too much in the more dramatic, critical scenes, so I left it rather with the feeling "ok, right, cool" than "oh boy, not again...". But that's where I sometimes wish me more creativity and boldness from game makers in terms of story and characters. Which if I remember right actually was the case in Dust most of the time (Fuse was mislead, just as Thethys and Kane, I do appreciate that). But Gaius kind of disappointed me; a guy seemingly only evil for the sake of being evil. I wish games would see things less in black and white and bring more reasoning to those you fight. It seems there was some background to him, but he didn't really get the chance to explain himself. The dialogue with Dust in the end was your standard chliche to be honest (everyone sticking to his opinion and just repeating himself over and over until there is only the one-must-die situation left).

I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just letting you know that this is an option. I still have trouble figuring out how to effectively partial-quote here.

I think it's that I played Muramasa: The Demon Blade first and I keep instinctively wanting this game to have everything that one does. It's not this game's fault and I really hate that my brain is doing this to me instead of just letting me enjoy the game for what it is.
I haven't ♥♥♥♥♥♥ through the whole thing yet (I appreciate the spoiler blocking). But for me, the nagging thing that bothers me about the game is the running/walking animation. It's a clunky sort of walk that doesn't match the rest of the character's movements.

I love that Fidget breaks the fourth wall repeatedly. The combat is a little simplistic, though I am playing on normal so my opinion on that doesn't count.

In fact, there was originally supposed to be more to the story[www.gamasutra.com], but unfortunately it had to be cut.
I wonder if they'll ever release the final chapter as DLC.
Wait. So the game ends abruptly? Rhykevance and/or Mint Vanilla probably addressed this, but I can't read their blacked-out text yet because I haven't ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that far in the game.

Wasn't it only a *planned* chapter, though? And if I recall correctly, that Gamasutra article Mint linked (which I read a few days ago) said that the last chapter would have supposedly taken a few months of development time for only 2 hours of game-time. It wouldn't be a matter of just polishing it up and then releasing it.

Not to mention that Dean is just one guy, and it'd be best to focus on making his new game be the best it can be, rather than taking months to add an extra chapter to his old game.
Isn't that the way of adding extra chapters anyway? Admittedly I have a very limited understanding of what goes into adding content to a game but from what I've read, some portion of the work was already done but had to be cut due to time constraints. At this point they have a finished product and could charge a few more bucks for extending the story and adding in the village mechanic. They did something similar for Mark of the Ninja.
Wait. You're telling me that they deliberately left stuff out (in this case, a chapter or two) so they could charge extra for it later?
No, it was left out due to time constraints. I was speculating that it might be available later as DLC. Just a speculation. I have no basis for believing this will be the case nor reason to believe it was intended as a means to squeeze players.
I haven't finished it eaither, but my understanding is that Gaius was intended to be a lesser boss and there was someone else pulling his strings. This is based on the article linked above.
