Unfortunately, if you can't devote a chunk of time to playing and have to leave in the middle of a level, you'll lose your progress.
IIRC, when you start a new campaign, you can choose an old saved game and import your character from that. It's up to the mission designer, though.
missing games like ff tactics, those were best :)
In any case, they're refitting the base game with a new save system when they release the Berlin expansion in early 2014. If the checkpoint saves are the main thing preventing you from buying the game, you could always wait for the next big sale, or just get it while it's on sale now and wait to play it until the save system is updated.
Regarding the use of characters in other campaigns, that's something that's determined by the creators of said campaigns. Campaigns can be flagged to allow character imports, however characters finish the main campaign with so many skill points that it can be very difficult to create a challenge for them, let alone provide any meaningful progression. As a result, most workshop campaigns tend to be for new characters.
They have announced the ability to save anywhere with the release of the DLC. This includes the main campaign so it will likely be a patch. It won't be a problem much longer.
i got the game anyway, the checkpoints seem pretty reasonably distanced to me at least
I suspect that for the majority of people, playing on normal, and dodging major bugs, it won't even be noticible.
You can't save when you want?
