how bad is the save-issue?
i heard time and time again that the issue with way too far-spread checkpoints can ruin the main-campaign
is it really that bad? do you fail frequently enough to make that matter? and does it also apply to custom-campaigns from the workshop? do some of those have a save/load-anytime-i-want feature?

also, can you use one character for multiple campaigns or do you have to start over?

It's not that big of a deal. I played on Hard and only wiped a handful of times. Most missions are broken up into enough areas so that you don't have to replay much if you fail.

Unfortunately, if you can't devote a chunk of time to playing and have to leave in the middle of a level, you'll lose your progress.

IIRC, when you start a new campaign, you can choose an old saved game and import your character from that. It's up to the mission designer, though.

if it´s really just that, i think im going to get it
missing games like ff tactics, those were best :)

The problem with saves isn't dying and getting sent back so much as running into game-breaking bugs that send you back an hour, with no guarantee that it won't happen again at the same spot.

Just to provide a counterpoint to Jarin's problems with the game, I've put 70 hours into the game and only come across one such bug. That was in the final fight, and it had a save point right before the fight started. This is not to say the game is bug-free (mileage varies, and all that), but my personal experiences with it have been very positive.

In any case, they're refitting the base game with a new save system when they release the Berlin expansion in early 2014. If the checkpoint saves are the main thing preventing you from buying the game, you could always wait for the next big sale, or just get it while it's on sale now and wait to play it until the save system is updated.

Regarding the use of characters in other campaigns, that's something that's determined by the creators of said campaigns. Campaigns can be flagged to allow character imports, however characters finish the main campaign with so many skill points that it can be very difficult to create a challenge for them, let alone provide any meaningful progression. As a result, most workshop campaigns tend to be for new characters.

They have announced the ability to save anywhere with the release of the DLC. This includes the main campaign so it will likely be a patch. It won't be a problem much longer.

sounds good they fix it
i got the game anyway, the checkpoints seem pretty reasonably distanced to me at least
Jarin Dec 1, 2013 @ 3:18pm
I think it can be reasonably summed up as "the checkpoints aren't a problem... until they are" :P

I suspect that for the majority of people, playing on normal, and dodging major bugs, it won't even be noticible.

Are you serious?
You can't save when you want?
Jarin Dec 1, 2013 @ 5:01pm
Nope. You get set saves at checkpoints, but that's it. You CAN revert to an earlier save if you wish, either rewinding your main game, or copying it to a second save file, but no free-saving until January.

So far only lost "process" ones. After the first decker mission I thought it said that it saved. I quit and upon reloading my game I was back before that mission. Otherwise I have had no issue so far.

People are too spoiled with rpgs nowadays hitting F5 before every encounter. This was an effort to bring out some old school style, and checkpoint saves are a part of that.
michaelmerlin Dec 1, 2013 @ 11:33pm
The saves can be more then a half hour apart and often aren't in very logical places, so if you hit a point when you want to stop it can mean needing to reply a large area. The matrix sections are especialy bad about this.
Init Dec 2, 2013 @ 1:57am
its not that bad it just auto saves every area loaded so if it was a big area and you die at the end you have to do the whole thing over it also lets you load previes areas though it is a rewind and any saves above that will be gone if you do that.
Fishook Dec 2, 2013 @ 2:41am
I don't think the saves are too bad as long as you play conservative, but its not suitable for a quick blast, but I generally play games in 1/2 to 2 hour settings so was'nt a problem for me, but I don generally like checkpoint savess due to having other stuff in my life. The only problems I had was with UGC, but there are far worse save systems out there IMO.

I actually hate the save issue. After having played for some time I want to be able to stop and go on from where I stopped. But this forces me to play on or do the same stuff again.
