It's one of the reasons why having a group of Starving Bandits attack a well geared, well skilled, character can still be a reasonable threat.
I played around a bit with learning how to practically use a staff when I was younger. It's a darn surprisingly quick weapon to use and has a pretty wide range of attack types/targets. Unfortunately, it guides most opposing weapon strikes straight at your knuckles unless certain measures are taken... :)
There should be many more "fingerless" bandits out there in the world of Kenshi. :)
My recommendation is if you want to use a staff, Train your staff user with a Wakazashi first, until around DEX30
Really, Staff is probably harder to master than Heavy Weapon or Martial Arts, but as the Spider Foreman proves (He wields the Meitou class staff), one SKELEBOI with a Staff can wipe out 30 mid-level adventurers, lol.
"Lol! Look! A Skeleton with a staff! How cute! Get 'im, boys!"
<Ten Minutes Later>
"Hnngh... Nnng.. Did we win?"
That was my first encounter with Security Spiders too, I erroneously assumed they were "Iron Spider Pups" and paid for that really fast.
In my current game, I've only had two squaddies KIA, one Hive from a Megacrab instakill, and another Hiver lost to security spider squish. In this case, his Toughness worked against him lol. He had just enough toughness to go just enough negative for a lucky unarmored strike to insta kill.
Wait, there is a "light weapon" class of some sort in the game? Because it seemed to me all polearms are pretty fast, but who knows. It might be dependent on animations for a specific weapon, too.
Yeah light weapons rely on the DEX stat and heavy weapons rely on the STR stat, although I think both are pretty important for any fighters.
