COH2 AI is too difficult
Whether is on theatre of war, multiplayer, or the campaign itself, The Company of Heroes 2 computer opponent has been increasingly more difficult through the updates. I find myself finding it harder and harder to keep up with the AI (including on standard mode), even with up to 4 other humans assisting me in multiplayer mode. Although I agree the russian pak, tanks, and artillary need to be considerably nerfed, the AI overall needs to be taken down a notch. I'm a veteran RTS player who's been playing RTS games for almost a decade now. Overall, I cannot relax in ANY game, taking away the games FUN factor. People have to fight an AI enemy that instantly controls EVERY unit, unlike us humans who can only focus on whatever is on our immediate field of view...please, throw us humans a bone here! -Shadowshaun

Often this game is being taken as an RTS because of the base building option but I consider it more as an RTT.

RTS games usually involve a pool of resources on your side of the base that you can harvest constantly at a comfortable rate without the worry of being cut off. In COH2 you have to constantly maintain control over a certain amount of territory in order to both keep the resource in-flow rate and win. This involves a lot of unit micro-management when there's a unit cap and not very well written unit path-finding/combat AI. It tends to exhaust the player.

In a 3v3/4v4 game it becomes much more obvious. One or two players' incompetence can seriously drag the whole team down.

techly bots get unfair advanages like no fog of war + more resources

Bots having bullseye mortars renders a lot of tactics moot, especially snipers. Basically anytime I look away from a sniper for more than a couple seconds, they've been hit by a magically homing mortar round, frequently fired without any LOS or way around the sniper's camoflage.

With how bots work, players are punished for finesse play (using grenades, precision units like snipers, or most CO abilities), leaving brute force the superior alternative. Ostwinds and T70s/M5s are far more effective at killing AI infantry than grenades, snipers, or mortars, to the point where using the latter feels like a waste of resources. Often I find molotovs to be a questionable investment for the Soviets, since the AI will pack up, move, and redeploy an MG in the time it takes a conscript to "light the bottle."

Try not to molotov/rifle grenade click your way to the enemy unit, do that only after your unit is in range. This seems to shorten the bot response time and allow the weapons to deal some damage.

oh... such comments make me sad

Do you understand that STRATEGY GAMES are not supposed to be relaxing because you need to THINK and USE your BRAINS when you play them?

If you want to relax and have fun than you should play console shooters and arcades.

Of course you can relax in a strategy games, especially turn based games. That's why there is in general a skirmish AI.
And also matches against casual players, who don't follow standard build orders or abuse every ♥♥♥♥, like the "skilled" ones, are in general entertaining and funny.

To OP: If you play, as it seems, Germans against Russian AI, than you have to gather and secure fuel points to fast build Ostwinds and then P IV. Ostwinds are good against the infantry spam of the Russian AI. Don't build infantry units except of maybe a mg and grenadier squad at the beginning and pioneers in mid late game for repairs, because the AI will kill them with it's mortar spam.

I like the fact that the AI is quite challenging but I do not like what have been stated earlier is the cheating.
Knowing exactly where my units are, mortars hitting perfectly without clear sight and yes, they react instantly when we throw grenades etc.
But then again .. if they do remove these AI bonuses it would become too easy cause atm the only time I lose is when my AI buddys continue to build useless units against the heavy tanks the other brings.
Else you just have to build a big group of random tanks and rush their base and you win.

AI sucks when you are playing MP 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 and somebody drops, it just spams units and basically screws the game up because they have no LoS or Fog of War giving their side a huge advantage up to the point where it becomes just funny, paks and mortars capping and the AI crumbles altogether keeping its units in base because the AI knows it lost. 2 people dropping is even worse and its a regular occurance that they need to fix asap.

Playing AI under expert level 1v1 is just a joke but good practise for beginning players or testing new things. Expert AI 'cheats' even more, with units that seem to take more damage before getting killed but the AI allways does the same and your brain does not so you have the advantage.

I've found the AI very easy. The only semi-difficult AI for a seasoned RTS player is expert mode German AI because of the crazy resource bonuses.

I won all the theatre of war and it was eazy playing the Russians but hard playing the German but i was playing it on the hardest difficulty but playable.

It's alot harder for soviets thats for sure. I like to use moltovs on grenadier sqauds if they start to move as your cons is lighting it you can cancel it and now the grenadier has stopped firing his MG 42 because he had to move. Course he can start firing again but then you can just start to throw a moltov again haha

Yeah... CoH1 was fun and very fair against AI, even in the campaign. In this one... its pure madness, just chaos. And if you happen to not be very experienced in strategy games or good/fast thinking then you wont be very happy with this game...

Standard AI seems to be more difficult than Hard. I find myself losing to Standard far more than Hard AIs.

seems odd sometimes did a skirmish with a friend other day with 2 standard ai and was relativly easy did another skirmish today with a friend against 2 standard and the ai were totally insane lol they even had katushyas and kv flamethrower tanks running around never seen that before on standard anyway

Actually the AI is easy...it was designed as a Rushing AI...so if you can block or hold out...the AI gets confused...and its coding falls apart. On Standard AI the AI gets confused in annilation games...revealing some fatal flaws. It doesn't react well to microed units...and may not deploy essential units like snipers until after the fact and more than 50minutes into the game!

Like in CoH1 where time begins to cause the AI problems and past about the 30 minute mark the AI reverts to spamming engineers or call in units...and not diversifying its units. CoH2 is about the same...just a tad different. It usually goes heavy with call-ins and vehicles...so if it goes vehicle heavy...using AT guns carefully will easily trip up the AI and then you can literally start ripping the map away from the AI. And because its a rushing AI it usually doesn't cap all the territory off the bat...so you can seriously find the weakpoints in the enemy line.

On most maps I find that the AI is generally attacking straight into my base...and or from the northern side of the base...so it shows the AI is not really well set up...and is following a waypoint system. Both German and Russian Players can easily defend themselves with success by playing blocking operations mostly with AT guns, with an occassional support vehicle thrown in for good measure. And heavy usage of infantry is mandatory...kill off the AI infantry and the computer will not keep infantry in the mix and go vehicle crazy. This is both on standard and extra resources. Once you get the AI to go this route, keep your infantry in the game...because for every vehicle loss the AI even with resource advantage is at a serious disadvantage. This will allow you to win in the end against the AI.

Oh and this AI does adjust a bit after you beat it...so keep unusual tactics in the mix.
