Crash on startup after 1.4.2f5? Read this!
Hi Folks,

We've been made aware that some users are suffering from a crash on startup after the latest hotfix. We realize this must be extremely frustrating and we're sorry for this slipping through but in our tests and via public testing we didn't receive any reports of this issue.

We want to get you in the game as soon as possible so I'd like to provide distinct steps so you can help us on our way to a fix:

  1. Try the troubleshooting steps in our Startup crash article[brightrockgames.userecho.com]
  2. Try the troubleshooting steps in our General crash troubleshooting article[brightrockgames.userecho.com]
  3. Log a report via User Echo[brightrockgames.userecho.com] with as much information as possible as requested in our Guidelines[brightrockgames.userecho.com]

Thanks and we hope you can get you back in the game soon!

Cheers,

Lee

We've just rolled out a special hotfix (1.4.2f6) for Windows 32-bit Users only. This corrects an issue that was present in the 32-bit version of the game.

If you are on a 32-bit Windows OS and were suffering from this issue please let us know if this has fixed the issue.
How can I check if I have the 32 or 64 bit version of the game? I'm running the game on x64 Win7pro, and the hotfix was just applied. So I wonder if by some accident I'm running the game in 32 bit mode when a 64 bit mode would be available.

Hi by default Steam will download the correct version for your OS version.

You can confirm the version number on the game's main menu in the top left corner. Win64 should be on 1.4.2f5 while Win32 is 1.4.2f6.
Thanks for the clarification. There is just one thing, though. I don't know if it has been improved, but the RAM usage is really through the roof. In the mission after Balmore Pass, the one with the Keno, the game crashed when I tried to save the game - with a RAM usage of 3.6 GB! Granted, I had quite a number of converted enemy minions plus my own, but that still seems excessive. My system has Win7pro x64 with 8 GB RAM, and all of my other software was disabled to have as much RAM available as possible.

Can you please have a look at the RAM usage? Thank you!!!

We've continued to optimize the game as much as possible and always look for further areas to make savings. With that said War for the Overworld is a real-time strategy game with highly deformable environments, units that are driven by their own AI and complex pathfinding. The large the map becomes the more of this has to be stored in memory.

It actually pushes the boundaries on CPU and RAM compared to most RTS games, that's why we recommend 64-bit operating systems and 8-GB of RAM.

Naturally though with your system we wouldn't expect the game to be crashing on a save. If you have any output logs for that event it'd be great if you could get in touch on our bug tracker, chucking over your dxdiag would be great as well. :)

Can you tell me where to find the log files and the dxdiag file? I'd love to help solve this.

Hi Guys,

We've just pushed v1.4.2f7 live for Mac OS X only. The only change in this hotfix is a fix that should allow affected Mac users to play again. If you're on a Mac let us know how you get on.

Cheers,

Lee

You can find details on our log files here[brightrockgames.userecho.com] as for DXDiag it's a component in windows just type DXDiag into the search bar and start the program then click "Save all information" that'll allow you to output a text file with all the info in it.
Okay, I just posted my issue in the bug tracker under "Crash because out of memory". If you need anything, please get back to me.

1.4.2f8 has just been pushed as well for all OS. However there's no changes just technical backend stuff. :)
