Do you like the Doomguy's face in the HUD?
I sure do. Maybe it's obsolete when compared to blood marks on the screen, which tell the direction of incoming attacks, but it's fun to look at it, because of its responivity to action in the game. The last game to have this is probably Hacx, after that I hadn't seen it again, unless if counting the stationary faces. Too bad, because that really makes any game better and makes the player character deeper and feel closer to the player. But do we want them back, or just make HUDs as small as possible without "useless crap"?

I like the hybrid HUDs where it is minimalistic, but still has the face next to the health. So long as the resolution is high enough (or multiple textures) then it doesn't get in the way.

Having other ways to tell the direction of an attack is just a bonus.
