I believe there is a 3rd faction planned in the long run. We will have to wait a bit.

I'd much prefer they focus and develop the exisiting 2 races further and add in better, more indepth economy management so there's a more solid foundation to eventually build that 3rd race.

IMO, I still think the two exisiting races still need a lot of work and more economy management needs injected to the game. I have no issues with the 2 races being the standard in ashes right now if it means more work refining the game gets done, adding in the 3rd race will take time away from the developers and then there will be balancing issues between the 3 races that'll need addressing, heck, distinguishing the unit count and UI still needs a lot of work and units bunched together are impossible to upgrade, I personally feel there's still a bit left to do to polish the game before the 3rd race gets added.

Just my opinion.

I've never really understood why people want gazillion races and units in a strategy game. Intelligent strategic decisions require you to know what you are against. More races just means that you have more knowledge to be absorbed before you can even get into the pure strategic gameplay. Before you have all the necessary knowledge (basicly know the rules), it's more about stacking your knowledge of the games races and units against the opponent's. Basicly being lucky to throw the units at the opponent that he doesn't know enough about to effectively counter them.

Chess, arguably one of the greatest strategy games ever designed, has one race, six units, and every unit can basicly only do one or two things. Anyone can learn the rules (including the units) in 60 seconds, and after that it's pure strategy. And even with just that minimal ruleset, players have pretty much unlimited amount of strategic options during a match.

I would actually like to see the ranked 1v1 to be made PHC only. Having to pick a race, therefore somewhat choosing your strategy, before you even know the map or your opponent, is just guess work. By having only one race the knowledge required to be competitive would be lowered, which would hopefully encourage more of the singleplayer only crowd to join. Additionally the endless debate of balance and the endless effort required to achieve it would be put to rest. Often the imbalance between the races actually limits the viable strategic options each race has when facing one of the others. If your race happens to be weaker at air superiority, it's basicly one less strategic option you have - Regardless if it's technically possible.

However, when the game gets rid of the necessity to painfully balance the races for a 1v1 matchup, additional races could be made significantly different. If there would ever be 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 ladders or tournaments, I would probably allow one of the special races for each side. Maybe not in 2v2s though, and maybe two in 4v4s or bigger games. In such matches the vastly different races would serve a specific role, and it would be up to the teams to effectively utilize their strengths (imbalance). Competitive 1+n vs 1+n games are way different and more difficult to perfect than 1v1s anyway, so I think the additional knowledge requirement would be fine.

From what I have read the post-summer expansion should be right up your ally. I hadn't thought about it but your reasoning makes sense too. Easier to create and balance a full 3rd faction when the existing two are fleshed out and mature.

A third race will come. I think it is going to be quite a different one as the first two lore wise are based off the same tech line while I think the 3rd faction would be alien. In MP games PHC players seem to far outweigh Substrate so I guess people prefer more ballistic style weapons over beams, hopefully the devs take that into account. Though perhaps when a campaign comes out that is based on the Substrate more people will feel comfortable playing them.

I don't want a godzillian units with heaps of factions but if there were another faction..well it may make the game a little easier.. Does somebody understand me for what I mean?

I can't say I do understand. Why would it make the game easier? It's all fine and dandy having heaps of faction but I would certainly much prefer you build associated parts of the game to accomodate atleast the current two factions.

Unit count - Atm it's near impossible to know how many units you have, there needs to be a UI overall with the unit info.

Dread upgrades - try to upgrade a batch of dreads, it's impossible to select them because the dreads are all bunched in together. Heck, even zooming in it's impossible because the dreads overlay one another.

There's quite a long list I could go on but i would only be repeating myself.

IMO, and it is just my opinion but I feel the game needs more polish, more management to the economy (I know you mentioned this Ticktoc) but just putting the argument out there. I still strongly feel giving the game polish, balancing it further and setting a really solid foundation for a 3rd faction to come is the best bet.

I'm not saying my views are gospel so I'm not shooting down your post just posting what I feel is a compelling argument on my part that long term building the foundation instead of wham throw in a 3rd faction imo is the more logical choice, I strongly feel that AOTS as so much potential which is why I'm quite passionate and vocal about this 3rd faction thing.
