Modders have look under the hood and there a lot there to still tap into.
Sam already almost made a new racing game with Bagedit and the ROMU game engine:

But at this stage with Wreckfest getting close to a final version, don't think Bugbear would try introducing anything new graphic wise and risk having bugs.
I would have to say Wreckfest looking pretty good right now. :) And while in a middle of a race, I don't notice eye candy much. More likely notice eye candy watching the replay.
Online I have to tone graphic settings down a bit to help keep FPS above 40 to try and avoid lag online.
No doubt will be more improvements and changes anyway,i don't think anything is final yet (although some things might not change).
