Out of the loop, did they try to show off about adding a trans character or something? I don't understand what there is to show off about if so.

I play with a trans person daily on my TS server. Didn't know they where trans until a month after I knew them because it was never a topic that was important. Honestly the character does not seem offincive just more.. annoying at there special ness. Remove the dialog about the name and I would enjoy her more.

Scott was boasting about it to Kotaku in a recent interview.

Honestly, I wouldn't care if she were a turnip provided she told good stories without forcing her "progressive" nonsense on people.

"There’s also four new companions, one of whom is gay, one of whom is bisexual. There’s even a monster companion, a throwback to a Baldur’s Gate II easter egg. But it’s not just about representation for representation’s sake. Beamdog wanted to give players options. " -From the Kotaku interview

They're talking about changes made, as you would expect in an interview about modifying and expanding an old game. "People that aren't straight now exist". That's hardly a target painted, or some cry for social praise. But, yes, mentioning it will make hoards of "the backlash" come out and decry how they want a world free from political ideology, one with only straight people, without even realizing the irony.

I'm glad you made this post. I have a trans friend who I knew for 10 years before he changed. Now she absolutely hates ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like this, because it's pandering, pat-yourself-on-the-back ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Not only is it so 'in your face' and obvious, Amber made it clear that it was political move and doesn't care.

Beamdog must be pissed with having chosen someone like her who pulled a PR stunt like this.

No, it has to be a political statement and you have to just let everyone know it. Otherwise how would people know how great you are as a person, and isn't that what social justice is really about?

this!

they have insane priorities anyway. they rather fight for the rights of fictional characters than fighting actual social injustice in real-life........ like the fact that nobody in our society cares about domestic violence against men, even though the statistics prove that almost 40% of victims are male. this is actually known since the 70s!

I don't see why it matters if they add characters like that, what matters to me is how they get some sort of gratification in revealing it.
Leoofmoon Apr 3, 2016 @ 4:47pm
I can understand that. I am a bisexual male and when I see a very shoehorned in gay character I just have to wonder why there even there. I like it in games where people can be something other then the norm and no one cares.

Wonder where the gamergate joke fits into all of this. A self confessed SJW who is chummy with Kotaku (of "gamers are dead" fame) includes a gamergate reference and expects there to be no backlash from supporters of gamergate. "It was just a joke, we weren't taking sides", yeah right. Hell, I think she wanted the backlash. It's fuel for her. For her, but not for Beamdog sales I suspect. People are getting too wise to this stuff.

Leave the strawman alone and pick on somebody your own size.

I'd gladly welcome well-written gay and transexual characters in Baldur's Gate. Where is our Arcade Gannon (Fallout: New Vegas), and Doran (Dragon Age: Inquisition)? Why does Amber's characters introduce themselves with their gender identification codes first? That doesn't make them interesting or unique, it comes across as pandering and weak.

There's a tans NPC in the new expansion and the topic of their gender comes up in a kind of forced, unrealistic way. It's just one conversation, but the writer basically said she added it because she thought the old games weren't diverse enough, and you know how fanboys are about the objects of their nostalgia.
So the whole thing got blown way out of perportion.

That is the most unfortunate part of the story. All the so called "progressives" are doing with their screaming and antagonism is making life worse for the very people they think they are helping. =/

The only well-written transgender character I've seen is Vivian from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (even though it was censored in the American translation). And she's one of the most popular Paper Mario partners. She wasn't transgender "just because." No, it was an integral part to her story. Her sisters made fun of her and bullied her, calling her "not a real sister." Everyone treated her mean... except for Mario. Mario showed kindness and got Vivian to switch sides.

Also, it's impressive that she was still a very well-written and lovable character even when they censored out the fact that she was transgender. She was still a great character because her being transgender wasn't the only interesting thing about her.
