Talon is an awesome game, but I don't know what you mean by faithfully recreates multiplayer Descent. It uses the fast and powerfull Torque engine (from Tribes2) for smooth framerate and expansive indoor/outdoor/outerspace gameplay. I think it's the first 6DOF in outerspace game as there was no strafing in Freespace.

I think you're confused, Talon re-creates the multiplayer D1/D2 fairly well. Descent 3 sucked mostly because the levels got too big and ruined the pacing.

Talon for now is multiplayer only, and anyone who remembers Descent 2 primarily played it for multiplayer over Kali/Kahn an IPX emulator.

Freespace was never part of "Descent", the company behind Freespace borrowed the descent name because of trademark conflict with another software package.

FreeSpace was Volition's first project after the split from Parallax Software, which also spawned Outrage Entertainment.[20] It is not part of the canon of the Descent computer game series, and contained none of its ideas and only small portions of its code.[21][22] It was only prefixed with Descent to avoid trademark issues with Mijenix Corporation's "FreeSpace", a disk compression utility.[23][24] Volition also used the term "FreeSpace" in the game to initially describe what became later known as subspace.[25]

Talon has the option to normalize the resultant movement vector to make all directions the same speed Tri-chording meant only 8 ship-relative directions were 1.7x speed, bi-chording meant only 12 ship-relative directions were 1.4x speed. (bi goes with tri, that's why I didn't say dual-chording.)

Talon has the option to have A-burns always on, but not as strong as Descent2. Descent2 2x speed Aburn which accelerated there immediately pretty much meant you could escape dogfighting whenever you wanted to, reducing effectness of the slower weapons.

I think Descent 1&2 had equally strong single and multiplayer. Talon has singleplayer just like Quake3 has singleplayer: play agaisnt the bots.

I never said Freespace was part of Descent. I simply mentioned that Talon may be the first 6DOF game that you can fly in outerspace (along with indoors and planetsurface.) Ship-relative Freespace is a 4DOF game. However world relative you can move in any direction but you have to turn to the direction you want to travel in.

Why would you reply to a thread that's two months old? Did you look at the date of my post?

I found it odd that you replied to a post I made in January. Either way, Talon is the closest thing we have to replicating the feel of descent 1/2 and that's without a doubt.

I've never counted single player "with bots" as a real single player game, since if you're honest with yourself, most 90's gamers didn't either. With a few exceptions where the game justifies it through enough content like maybe Unreal 2004.

Quake3/Unreal tournament were multiplayer oriented games.

Who cares when replies are made, if the content of the reply is valid what does it matter? However I have a feeling this thread is going to close soon as this forum is supposed to be about RetroVirus, and while going a little off topic is OK, this thread might be going a bit too far off.

If you get right down to it, this 'real' single player is playing against bots as well, after all who's controlling all those baddies shootin' at you, the computer that's who! Do you have to have lots of them just sitting around in rooms waiting for you to show up to make it 'real singleplayer'? I'm honest with myself. Was there a survey surveying 90's gamers about what constituted 'real' singleplayer? What justifications need to be met to achieve the status of real singleplayer? Quake3 was about equal opponents (speed,health,armor,weapons) roaming free shooting at eachother. While I agree playing against human controlled oppoenents is probably more fun/challenging, playing agaisnt only bots is still a valid singleplayer experience.

Geocore seems to be aiming for a faithfull Descent replacement. Maybe a little too close!
