What happens if I do THIS? (faction ships?)
Upon poking around the game's save files, I've found what appear to be faction ship folders (all of which are empty). Currently, the NPCs merely spawn as any given ship in my regular save file.

Now, if I were to move or copy one of those ship files into one of those faction ship folders, would that cause said ship to spawn only for that faction? How exactly do the mechanics work there? Is it possible to manipulate how NPC faction ships spawn and make up my own faction fleets, or are these folders just placeholders for the future?

I'm interested in the answer to this as well, when one of the devs or someone who knows comes along.

It'd be kinda cool to be able to stop pirate factions from using Capital ships and the like.

Well, assuming it works (it's difficult to see if it does due to having no way of identifying NPC affiliation), then building a full fleet setup for each faction and setting them against each other will be a fun passtime.

Right now, I think that it is not implemented, or that it serves another purpose. At one point I attempted to customise the game this way and it didn't seem to affect any spawning as far as I could tell.

If there are ship files in a faction folder, this faction will only spawns these ships. If the folder is empty, it will spawn ships that are in the game folder, meaning ships you build. This allow for faction customisation.

I'm confused, I'm seeing two folders for most factions like this:

[Farside Pirate Cartel Ships] - empty
[FarsidePirateCartel Ships] - has stock ships in it

Should the empty ones be there?

They're the same one actually. If you look at the .txt file lower, which are their kind. Like trader diplomat and all, each file will have both folder named, so i think it's probably for testing.

I can't really say since I'm not in the Dev team though. This is coming from my programming experience.

I figured that's what it did. Just asking for confirmation.

While we're on the subject, would it be possible to rename factions and manipulate them? I see text files with their names. Would playing with them have any effect or would it be overriden by something/mess something important up?

Well, actually, I've placed custom ships into faction folders, but it seems to have no effect so far. They all still use every ship at random. It dosen't help that there's no way currently to tell which faction I'm seeing except by shooting them.

At any rate, there should be a more solid way of editing factions and playing with their diplomacy, ship use, ratios of certian ships (so you can set it to, say, 100 fighters spawn per every 1 Battleship, instead of a random mix), behavior (changing their general aggression level, etc). This would be wonderful for setting up a custom galaxy or multiplayer server later on.

Hrm, yeah, it's hard to say what's working and not without faction IDs.

I'm sure they plan to create a full system for editing factions, right now they just wanted the framework. It'll be interesting to see how that evolves.

I dunno if this is how they plan to do factions for the galaxies, but perhaps factions will be procedurally generated from certain rules, rather than preset factions, becasue that would allow for more variabliity. Maybe not though. Possibly that could depend on the limit for factions too, I suppose.

Do i need to create a new galaxy in order to make factions use those ships ?

I made some testing and it seems putting ships in factions folders does nothing.
