AI "logic": Mars must be proctected(10 legions) at all costs! My Homeworld? They're on there own.
Just an observation.

Theres this odd pattern where for any faction that has has a low quality system next to their homeworld(Terran,Drengin,Krynn, and so on...) for some reason they end up treating that planet
as if its their homeworld. 10 defending legions, scientist, engineers and worker citzens stationed. All 10 nearby asteroids assigned to this planet - to fair thats understandable as that planet might benefit more from bonus production. But with the other signs it seems to suggest that they consider that planet more valuable than their homeworld

Meanwhile their homeworld sitting right next to planet, may still have ships defending - I dont recall which planet has the better defensive fleet - but after that its completely vulnerable to ground invasions.

I cant help but wonder what in the world led them to this strategic choice? Maybe its because they run out of tiles sooner so they start stationing garrisons because "gotta build something"

That is very interesting. I don't have a good answer for that either. But I think I'll have to look into that.

I had not seen that pattern, but I have noted that when the AI starts to lose it goes masada on some crappy planet somewhere, with a goal of having at least 50 legions there.
Turns out it more like a 50/50 chance - now that I'm looking out for this pattern I've noticed that sometimes the homeworld is properly defended. For example, in the game these screenshots are from, the Torians stationed 10 legions on Toria.

The Iconians on the other hand... 7 legions on Sanctum, 1 legion on a level 5 planet, and 0 on New Iconia
