What it seems for now :

Xeno Adaptation : allow colonization of barren worlds, get rid of the -50% production and give bonuses for all extreme worlds

Extreme Colonization : allow colonization of Frozen and Aquatic worlds

Colonization Focus : nothing...

Any information about that ?
I think you're reading it wrong

Xeno Adaptation clearly states that it allows colonization of extreme worlds "with reduced production"

That means you can colonize those worlds but have a huge production penalty for doing so. This is also clearly marked when you colonize those planets and mouse over the description where it lists the huge production penalty.

Extreme Colonization again states the same thing "with reduced production" that means colonizing those worlds has a production penalty

Atmospheric Cleansing again states the same thing "with reduced production" that means colonizing those worlds has a production penalty

Each of those 3 tiers allows colonization of different extreme planet types and not a single one of them removes any penalty

The first thing that removes the production penalty of an extreme world is: Colonization Focus which does not unlock your ability to colonize any worlds, it lets you choose which type of extreme planet no longer has a penalty and changes it to a boost depending on which one you picked

This is followed by Biosphere Perfection which is again like Colonization Focus before it another removal of penalty for a specific type of extreme planet that you pick from.

In game flow in order:

Xeno Adaptation: can colonize barren worlds, they have a production penalty when you do

Extreme Colonization: can colonize frozen and aquatic worlds, they have a penalty when you do

Colonization Focus: pick one of "aquatic, frozen or barren" remove the penalty for only that type and give it a bonus instead

Atmospheric cleansing: can colonize radioactive and toxic, have a penalty when you do

Biosphere Perfection: pick one of "radioactive or toxic" remove the penalty only for that type and give it a bonus instead

Thank you Kunovega, that's how I expect it to behave.

But ingame, as soon as I have researched Xeno Adaptation, the -50% penalty disappear and bonuses are applied on extreme worlds...

It's with Terran on a fresh install of the game with no mods. Has been like that for a long time
Campaign or sandbox? What DLC?

Campaigns follow the old rules of whenever they were published. Sandbox is up to date with latest version assuming you have all DLC

What you are describing should not function that way in sandbox, current with all DLC

Campaigns I don't know, they all have their own rule sets and mixes of the game with only certain DLC can behave strange even in sandbox
Sandbox, with all DLC except the Star Control ones and Mech Part

Here are 2 screens of a frozen and a baren world, with Xeno Adaptation researched but Extreme Colonization not yet researched.
Baren is colonizable but frozen isn't.
And as you can see, penalty has disapeared and bonuses are applied.

When did you start this game? This is a bug dating back to 3.1/3.2, it has since been fixed, 3.4 or 3.5
Just now with a fresh install of 3.9

I just started a Terran Resistance game today after reading this thread and I'm seeing the same thing he is in 3.9. This is the only game I've started after 3.9 release, so I haven't tested other races in the current build

But all the extreme planets currently have the bonuses with no penalty regardless of type:

And I haven't researched any version of Colony Focus yet:

So whatever happened, we're both affected. Maybe someone could check on the other civs. My previous posts were based on how I knew it should work without having tested current 3.9
