but seriously, software mode benefited almost noone these days and if your computer doesnt support opengl 2.1 or whatever sven's running then we cant really help you but to advise you to upgrade to a better cpu with integrated graphics/gpu
d3d was removed by valve and the current opengl is still holding back a lot of modern systems, whenever its drawing polys or dynamic lights

Jeez to be honest I'm pretty sure that if your pc is so old that doesn't run opengl 2.1 it probably wouldn't even open steam right
