Tomb Raider I: XBOX/Playstation Controller Fix
The following are steps to go about tweeking the DosBox mapper for PC controllers. This was tested on a Logitech F710 which has X-input/'XBOX' and D-input/'Playstation' modes. I will be posting controller instructions to the other classic TR games(TR 2-6) for those with this gamepad in the respective forums when I get the time.(Note: Legend, Anniversary and Underworld natively support XBOX controllers.)

In thoery, this fix should work with any controller as long as your PC recognizes it.

Note for XBOX 360 Controller Users: The following link is a streamlined guide courtesy of Darth Sidious [PT]

Steps to take:
1. If you have already modified the mapping ingame reset the keys to their original settings with the exception of the Jump, Roll, Action and Draw Weapon commands. Map these 4 commands to the desired gamepad buttons.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=143640947

Your ingame mapping should look something like this...
------------------------User Keys-----------------------------------
PAD8 Run_____________PAD+ Jump(Change to desired button)
PAD2 Back____________ENTER Action(Change to desired button)
PAD4 Left_____________PAD3 Draw Weapon(Change to desired button)
PAD6 Right____________PAD0 Look
PAD7 Step Left_________PAD5 Roll(Change to desired button)
PAD9 Step Right
PAD1 Walk____________PAD. Inventory

Note: The Action command will also double as a menu selection key.

The game will natively detect directional functions on the gamepad.

2. Close the game.

3. Relaunch the game. When the game starts to load you'll see the DosBox logo leading to a classic DOS loading screen. On that screen hit ALT+ENTER. This will window your game. Immediately after its windowed hit CTRL+F1 to get to the DosBox mapper. It takes a little practice to get to it as at times it may crash. Try not to move the mouse or click anything during this phase as it will crash you.

4. Once you're in the mapper you are going to want to modify keys according to the "Default Keys" you saw ingame earlier. These are the keys you want to modify...

DEL Step Right
PGDN Step Left
SHIFT Walk
PAD0 Look (PAD0 is 0 on number pad)
ESC Inventory(acts as a pause/continue/cancel/skip scene)
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=143602656

Highlight one of these keys on the mapper with your mouse. Once highlighted you'll notice an "Add" button appear near the bottom of the mapper. Click "Add" then press the desired button for that command on the gamepad. Repeat this process for the remaining 4 commands above. After you modified 2-3 keys save but -don't- exit. The mapper will somrtimes forget an input and you will have to re-enter so be patient.

Note: The mapper will not let you assign duplicate keys with the same command and there is no need to. Example, you need only modify -one- Shift key.

5. Verify that the 5 keys listed above are mapped by clicking on them in the mapper and seeing the gamepad command applied to the key on the left side of the mapper. Once verified hit Save then Exit.

Enjoy, you now have full controller support for TR1!

These are the current Logitech profile/control fixes for the other classic TR ganes. Updates will be applied if I come across any bugs.

If you're wanting ti go for the entirre classic TR1 Playstation experience with the original music and expansion here is the guide.

Tomb Raider Playstation music and Unfinished Business on Steam guide.

And for better visuals.

Enjoy!
Thank you for the help!

By the way, if someone wanted to install the PS1 Music/Unfinished Business expansion, install the nGlide program for improving visuals, and follow your guide for controller setup, what order do you recommend doing them in? Or does it matter?
I'd recommend that you follow the PS1 Music/Unfinished Business expansion guide first then the nGlide(Visual Improvements) and finish with this controller fix guide.
Thank you ^.^
This fix only needs to be applied once. The controls will translate over to Unfinished Business. I personally didn't need the Visual Improvements pack.
I noticed that the controller fix didn't translate over word-for-word for a windows xbox controller. I had to fiddle back and forth between modifying keybindings in the DosBox mapper and the in-game keybindings. If I remember correctly, the two shoulder buttons, the D-pad, and the start/back buttons did not work on the in-game keybindings but the rest did.

Otherwise, all the guides helped me get set up and running flawlessly.
The ingame mapping will only see four buttons at best. Shoulder, trigger, bumper and stick buttons will not take ingame. I'm not too familair with xbox controllers for pc. Does the ingame control config recognize the four color coded buttons? If so those should be set to the jump, action, draw and roll commands. Anything else has be applied to the dosbox mapper. Did the game not detect directional functions automatically from the controller?
The game recognized the control stick by default, but the deadzone caused issues, making the character turn or continue moving when the control stick was in the resting position. The range for moving forward/backwards is also too small, making it difficult to move as the player intends without accidentally turning instead. This is why I chose to use the D-Pad for movement instead. The game did not recognize the D-Pad however, so I had to use the DosBox to set that up. It recognized the colored buttons and the triggers as well, but not the bumpers or start/back buttons.
I'm having that issue. Got the buttons the way i want, using "JoyToKey". But it's a pain to run, because the analog is so sensitive. Lara runs around like she's drunk.
These classic games sure throw a tantrum with new controllers. It would be nice if some of these developers would revisit and improve gamepad compatibility especially if they know these games still sell.
Agreed. Tomb Raider II, III, IV work fine with the 360 controller, but Chronicles has the same issue, with the sensitive analog.

Found a way around it though. Using Joy To Key, i just assigned the movement keys to the D-pad. Feels like i am playing with the OG PS controller, before they added the analog sticks.
Yeah the D-Pad isn't too shabby, gets the job done.
Thanks for this post. It was very helpful! =)
Glad it worked out for you. :)
Great guide CrimsonBlitz. Thanks a lot!
