To explain more, if you do a jumping attack off your seikret (Weapons have 1 to 3 of them depending on buttons pressed) this does hidden 'mounting damage' in addition to the normal damage you see. Once a monster has taken enough mounting damage, usually 2 aerial attacks for the first one, then the hunter will mount the monster.
There are several things that can be done while mounted (look in the guide in the upper right while mounted) and the usual thing is to do attacks until there is a wound then use a focus strike to break that wound with a special finisher to do big damage and knock the monster down. Depending on the monster, I generally move to the tail and try and get that chopped off or move to the head to try and bait the monster into running into nearby obstacles and hurting itself before the finisher.
If you do get the finisher off, you get a special unique scene per weapon, I like the lance and long sword ones personally, do a bunch of damage, and usually knock the monster down.
You need to jump from some ledge tho, from the ground I can`t not do it, probably only works from the ledge.
Why do it is another question.
