That's basically it - they're gating mechanisms. Also, there are three achievements related to collecting them, one for each act.

No I don't think so. The "collectibles" achievement doesn't include luminaries.
Oh, sorry, you're right! In that case, no, there's only the achievement relating to collecting the first two luminaries.

Eh, I got to see more of the scenery I guess, and a lot of the little puzzles to get to them were fun. :)
That was the main reason we used them, in the end - to encourage people to do the side puzzles :) If we did it again, we'd probably put collectibles at the top of each puzzle, or something similar, so that you're rewarded with actual story hints etc. But, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I agree. You should've done that! I got all the Luminaries in Act 1. Especially like the ones where you trigger a cutscene to play on the wall and you need to climb atop the characters shadows. But when I realized there was no achievement for this, I stopped collecting out of my way in Acts 2 and 3.
