I agree its currently a compromise. When you are used to TrackIR there certainly are situations where the better resolution

and uses 1.2V AAA rechargeable batteries. Refreshrate is 75Hz and resolution is 640x480px. Software to use is open-source OpenTrack. You can also use other cameras if you already have one or find a
better one. The PS3 eye though is pretty perfect because it's super cheap, highly available and with a good refreshrate at an sufficient resolution for headtracking.
