Do I also have to buy the F14 Tomcat if I want to be my friend's RIO?
My friend wants to buy the F14 Tomcat and I want to be his RIO. Now my question is whether I also have to buy the F14 to be RIO or whether only he has to own it?

Sadly yes. One of the less gracious things about DCS.
There is a few mod for å trainer jet that has two seats. But that's it.

Other games let's people sit in the back in planes they haven't bought.
ED as also had the ability to make a plane specifically so people could sit in the back and try put DCS even if they don't have the equipment. Would probably lead to more money not less. Hell they haven't even added a back seat ability to the P51 trainer.

you are not just sitting in the back however, you are actually using the modules and its features.
it requires a purchase.

Quick, let´s all put on our thinking caps:
You want to use a module in DCS = You will have to have it installed, therefore own it.
Easy isn´t it ?

Why would you want to be free just to sit on the backseat ? Sightseeing while not being able to do anything ?

As has already been mentioned, there are other games that do allow you to play them as a companion to the player who owns it, so it's not unheard of or even particularly unusual.

DCS is not one of them, and that's fine... it's their choice, and I don't have a problem with it. But please let's not pretend that it's not something they could do if they chose to, and that others have done without even being asked.

Well since ED hasn't bothered adding a back seat ability to the free P51 they should do something.
It wouldn't be that hard to add a special feature to some of the modules (like the Huey) which is an older modual. Add a special feature where someone who doesn't own it can sit in the co pilot seat but not fly it. And give them the ability to control the door gunner.

Play them as fully simulated, as-real-as-it-gets module ?
Nice. Which games ?

If you stick with the non-steam version, you can get discount.
50% discount for first purchase+
Miles points or 10% discount. I suggest to keep the miles points. E.G.
The Supercarrier costs 40 USD. You will get 4000 Miles ( = 4USD )
Later you can apply Miles to by any addon with them. You can pay partially by Miles and partialy by money transfer or you can pay fully by Miles.

Or

20 USD discount when you will buy the crew pack (2 licences) Here:

An old Italian adage says: "don't look into the mouth of a gifted horse", than means: do not criticize something you get as gift.

Also: F-14 has been developed by Heatblur, so you should blame them, not ED.

Use the free trials so you can sit wherever you want for 2 weeks, plus you get individual trials so you can sit in the back of the F-14, then in the back of the Huey, etc.

Or

Download the T45 mod so you can sit in the back for free and even control the plane yourself.

Or

Have the guy up front screenshare. Congrats you are now in the same cockpit as them and cannot control anything like you wanted.

Or

Or just press F4 in multiplayer and slew the view so that you're over the cockpit.

Helicpters in ARMA are like in WarThunder. Just 3D model with something what developers call the flight model.

In the link I've posted is review of "Take On Helicopters" which have the same flight model which was later used in ARMA for some helicopters. There are tons of missing things to be simulated and many of them are simulated very inaccurately.
