Tried the unofficial fan patch which made no difference so in the end had to find a save game online to restart the level and the bug didn't recur.
I've read that it is advisable to save as near to the start of each level as possible and then back up that save game. (by going to the directory and copying out that saves folder). The game only lets you have a limited number of saves but it means if something goes wrong, as it did for me, you at least have a clean start of level save to go back to.
Thnx for the tip. :)
GOG version is much better, and has less bugs where the Steam version is absolute garbage. The bugs in the steam version are so bad that you cannot finish the game even though you can use the bug fix patch released by the community, and it still crashes like crazy.
STAY AWAY from the steam version.
GOG version is the way to go.
Is there a way of getting the Steam version up to date like the GOG one, an unnofficial patch or some thing?

Have fun playing.
The STEAM version is totally botched beyond repair :/
By the time of writing this can be picked up at 1.49€ on gog at the moment. (And you even get a copy of Elder Scrolls Arena and Elder Scrolls Daggerfall optimized for modern systems along with the Cuthulhu game)
