Oblivion Graphic Mods for Laptops!
Hello, I'm thinking of playing TES Oblivion (since it looks like such an amazing game) But was wondering if there were any Graphic mods I could use to bring it up to date a bit. I'm going to play on a core i3 laptop w/ a radeon graphics card, so i want a mod which won't completely make the game unplayable (on my laptop). I just need a mod to bring the graphics up just enough to make it look better. Thanks!

So in order to do it right and not give up in the end you're in for a good bit of work but the final results can def be worth it!!!

Number 1 are the Face overhauls that make them more similar to Skyrim.

Secondly Oblivion Reloaded - OBGE

^ BUT for the results that I found to be best and to get everything I wanted to work properly required a lot of tuning in the Config file for the mod and some files that have properties for certain things.

I can post my config file if requested but I recommend you understand enough about the mod so that you can set it up on your own and according to how you want it to look. - Not sure about performance considering I'm on an I7-4790k + 2080 ti running at 5k on a 2560x1440 monitor to force better AA since I found issues with MSAA and Nvidia doesn't like to force SSAA for this game, and previously had issues with my Vega 64 Forcing SSAA as well.

With OBGE you can get SMAA but it could cause a rendering issue on the water with my config and since I was already rendering at +200% Resolution the image looked nice enough without any traditional AA settings.

Sadly I don't think there is going to be just 1 simple mod that offers you a huge improvement without you having to do some tweaking in my experience. Be it something about it doesn't work right that you have to fix or just doesn't look right. For Example I removed the weather part of OBGE and DOF.

PS: Given that you're on a laptop Oblivion Character Overhaul version 2 might be all that you need. Oblivion by default is pretty good looking game and this will bring the characters up to standards. I wouldn't recommend Texture mods since in my experience even on high end systems those cause many issues including stuttering even after applying all the fixes I could find. Of course get the 4gb patch and you could experiment with Stutter remover if you're having problems but for me removing HD Texture packs solved all my issues.

OBGE after tweaking can significantly increase the quality and pretty much every part of the mod is configurable. - Also use a FOV mod.

One of these days I should make a detailed guide to Oblivion Graphics mods, it can take a massive amount of time to set everything up in a way that works and looks best for individual standards.

I forgot to mention

Weapon Improvement Project

and find a project that also updates all the stock clothes/Armor.

Also just found these

Really Textured Normal Maps for Vanilla

Magic Visuals Overhaul

(^ Installed and works well, not sure I like the Magic one though and the normals look good but really rough on wood) I removed the files for Weapons/Clothes because I already have mods for those.

PS: Simply deleting the Textures under "Wood" actually solves the problem by returning those to normal. btw what I did to install these was installed all 3 versions manually, made a folder on my desktop and combined all 3 packs since they're just Textures no ESP or anything, removed what I wanted to remove and am about to try and modify what I want to modify (tone down the wood with GIMP maybe, instead of removing it) and then pack it into it's own Zip folder and used Nexus Mods to install it. For some reason it worked when I copied another zip from a mod, deleted the contents and just put my Textures folder there in replacement of what the previous mod had again without any ESPs and then Nexus would actually install it when I go to add a mod manually by file.

^ This mod uses the default textures all it does is add more detailed normal maps so it should run fine.

Here are some Before and After Screenshots with the Normals mod (Oblivion reloaded is in all of them). I do think the intensity of the normal maps is overall a bit too high but it def makes interiors look better (After removing the wood textures) and looks great in many places. I might keep it.

Definitely use the character overhaul (you'll need oblivion script extended and blockhead installed to make it work). Should hurt your performance. Don't expect magic though....they go from potato headed cartoon characters to something like reasonably proportioned cartoon characters.

IT WAS ALWAYS PERFECT

After testing more with that normals mod I have decided not to use it because it can introduce some artifacts, some things just don't look right, Skingrad in particular looks really bad IMO.

I won't be using that one.
