What are Medals?

I just got a 1st rank gold level on a level and a 3rd rank bronze medal on another one. What do those medals mean and where can I see the one I obtained?

These medals appear when you beat Hardcore stages, and seem to have a lot to do with how many diamonds and gems you collect. They don't seem to have any bearing on goals, achievements, etc. and there's no way that I can tell to look them up.

then I have a second question for you: Do you see those medals once you collected them? As much as I see the ammount of artwork cristals unlocked, the ammount of stars, the time attack trophee and the point attack trophee, my medals remain hidden. In hardcore I just see "level complete" on the level I completed. Do you observe the same behaviour at your place?
