The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Morrowind Overhaul question.
I had a bit of trouble finding an answer for this in the international section of the official forums, so I'm hoping someone here can help.

Is it possible to tweak the overhaul settings without invalidating my current saves? My fps dips below 20 in some places (especially at night with many npcs around - I suspect it's the realistic lighting that's killing me). So, I would like to tweak some of the settings to boost my fps and have a smoother experience of this amazing game.

I tried to do this (I don't remember how, now) after starting my first character and found my saves invalidated when I restarted the game. I wasn't far in, so I just did a fresh install of the game and MO, but I guess I didn't change the right settings, because I'm still getting low frame rates. However, I am now fifteen or so hours in and unwilling to start a new character.

So, can anyone tell me if there is a way to run some part of the overhaul package again to tweak some settings without causing save file incompatability?

My eyeballs will very much appreciate any help. Thanks.
