1 Final Beta Key to give away + EU Netplay Reports
Hi guys, it's Gunsmith / Alan from Orochinagi.com. SNKP gave us 5 keys and we selected 4 players in Europe to help test out the netcode. Our final key will be simply posted 22 Aug on the site/ facebook and twitter around 13:00 GMT.

For those of you wondering about the EU netcode tests, we have tested it in Glasgow, Scotland, Paris France and London England and inbetween.

The code seems unstable at the moment and it reminds me of the console. The bars aren't exactly accurate and fluctuate - is this because of net congestion or something else?
-We also tested these while streaming and without. Of course turning off streaming helps but there is still a noticeable input delay.
-There were times when the match would suddenly slow down mid match and at one point stalled for synchronisation.
-There is noticeable host advantage

It is playable but at the same time difficult to react to things such as overheads/throws/mixups which are of course integral to KOF.

I personally think online play revolves a lot around prediction rather than reaction, it's not like you're ever going to match offline play...

Here are the players we tested with.

AtmaDP – Glasgow, Scotland
Hiecko – Glasgow Scotland
Tarma971 – Paris, France
Davito – France
mikku_taunter – Paris, France
Pharaon – Paris, France
mm_Zero – London, England
mienai_kage – London, England
M4zinkaiser – Italy

And here are the streams:

Games can start off as being acceptably smooth but progressively become more delayed as the match goes on. This was the case both with and without running a stream (there was 0 noticeable benefit when turning mine off)

The netcode is simply unacceptable, playing other fighting games with 100+ latency is still a better experience than fighting someone locally on this.

I sense that there may be something missing, in general if a game is laggy the delay is usually consistent, but with every game I play the delay is constantly increasing as the match goes on, getting worse the longer the game lasts.

I am in France and played with around 8 players online in Europe, every game was really too lagged and delayed (I had 2 3 and 4 bars), sometimes it was freezing, maybe there is a problem with Europe players because here is really unplayable.
Sometimes the lag was ok for 5 seconds in character select then I select my first char and the delay triples for the whole game ...

Stockholm, Sweden. Played a couple of matches vs connections in Paris and London. Appaling results, although some matches were better than the others. Still unplayable most of the time though, even with host advantage. Like mikku_taunter it _felt_ like the lag was getting worse as the matches progressed.

Something very weird also, two of the best connections were between Paris and Glasgow, and, Paris and London. Two of the worst were London and London, and Glasgow and Glasgow.

If there's something we can look for or do or info you need, please let us know!

Hi all!

Thank you very much for this feedback. Great stuff!

Yes! The lag can increase over time, it wasn't your imagination. That is one area that we are looking into now. In fact, with the release of v3, we put a few things in place that we hope will alleviate that. If you are able to retest and let us know whether or not the lag increasing over time problem is better, worse, or the same, that'd be great!

Thanks!!

Jace

The lag is less increasing over time now, but it is still very lagged, and now it's less smooth than before patch (more micro freezes) but this is better since you can "feel" the stuttering instead of getting your inputs suddenly delayed.
But the game is still completely unplayable, it looks like it is demanding too much connection stability to work, maybe find something to make it work on less stable connections or require less stability (it is not a bandwidth problem since I checked and the game takes around 30kilobytes/s to run)
On the good way but there is a lot of work to do until it is playable !

FRANCE TO FRANCE

BETA V.3

Pharaon said:
"Issues (might be the Steam client itself, not the game)
- Shift+Tab shortcut didn't work at first launches, then it got fine.
- Sometimes, couldn't connect to lobbys / invites didn't work. Went better after an hour
- Characters had a tendency to freeze at random moments

Online experience
I've played several guys, both as host & guest.

Host is still at advantage, but less than before. And it looks like the game got smoother for hosts. I almost felt no input lag against two 4-bar players in France, I was really impressed.
But as soon as opponent was under 4-bar, then the usual lag input described in my previous post came back.

Also, I had a lobby with a player from Germany who was at 1 bar (?!) and it was plain unplayable, almost a second of lag haha. Quite strange since Germany isn't THAT far away from France."

LONDON TO LONDON

Zero said (more or less):
4bars. As host, it was virtually lagless. As client there was lag but playable. Much better than yesterday.

LONDON TO FRANCE

3bars. There was lag but it was playable. Couldn't react to hops.

(London setup: 120MB down, 40MB up, 0 loss, minimal jitter high end setup.......)

What do the speaker indicators mean?

More reporting coming up

i posted videos of my impressions here on my youtube channel

for the full stream archive check my twitch channel

also ill copy what i wrote last night in the V3 thread here,

**********************************************************************************************

I streamed myself playing for almost 4 hours today and i talked alot about how i felt the netcode was, its a lot better i got to play a player from my city (London in England) who also has the beta in a long set and it was neer perfect (3 sometimes 4 bars), i has minor lag when playing vs a french tester (consistant 3 bars) also in a long set, i also played juicebox on a 1 bar connection and it was unplayable BUT it was the best 1 bar connection i have played on so far.

here are the links to my archive if anybody wants to check it out for themselves

http://www.twitch.tv/zero_uk_/b/449789279 (part 1) UK vs UK starts at 26:30

http://www.twitch.tv/zero_uk_/b/449812500 (part 2)

i had a conversation with the other london player and we both came to the conclusion that the quality of the connection starts to deminish over time during rounds, so it would start good but the longer the round the more lag you start to feel, but we also noticed that inbetween games it felt like the game would re-sync us so the start of every round the connection felt at its best. This is a step in the right direction, if this is what has changed in the recent patch, can the SNK staff confirm if the game is re-syncing between rounds?

we each had a turn hosting also and Host advantage in this connection felt lagless and host advantage is definately a big deal, as a guest you feel you have to go for the lest optimal easier combos for consistency online which is a shame, that being said its still very playable in its current state but it still can be better!

i have one last request for the SNK staff in the next patch allong with any netcode updates can you please unlock Billy and Saiki? seeing as arcade mode is locked no player can unlock them and its a shame to not have a complete cast.

thanks for taking the time to read this and to whoever does read this, its 1am and im extremely tired but im trying to get all my thoughts out while i still have them clear in my head.
sorry for any spelling and grammer mistakes but i really dont have the energy to proof read this after all the kof i just played LOL.

-Zero out-

**********************************************************************************************

im now gonna play v4, ill turn on my stream in about 10mins

Reports from Glasgow to uh Glasgow(Myself to Heicko) on V4.1!

It seems to be much better than before however there seems to be small freezes and hiccups when we played online, during these small freezes it seems as if inputs are lost entirely, so there is no buffer and it makes the games unplayable sadly.

EDIT: Played some games with Phaoron(Scotland to France) and they were playable but the delay made it still hard to react to hops for anti air, and HD combos were difficult to do, along with drive cancels.

Also played some games with Zero(Glasgow to London) and there was some small delay but better than the games to France. HD combos were easier though there was still some delay leading to drops, could definitely still have some improvement.

Update on V4.1 from tonight.

Glasgow > Glasgow: The lag seemed much improved from my previous play a couple of nights before. It still felt a little heavy but much improved. Then it began to freeze for anywhere from 1-3 seconds entirely where all inputs where dropped. Though returned to normal when it was over, but this freezing continued throughout the games.

Glasgow > London: I hosted a lobby and the connection was noteably heavier than the Glasgow connection. Interestingly though there was no freezing so it felt like a bit of a trade off. I got the feeling the other guy was definitely feeling the lag more than myself.

I then joined a lobby hosted by the London player to see the difference, similar results. Definitely a tad heavier than when I hosted but no freezes like I got with Glasgow to Glasgow. Things have improved but it is still much heavier than other fighters and reacting to a lot of things is still a bit of a stretch.

Atma Aug 23, 2013 @ 1:46pm
Glsagow to Germany felt pretty decent while hosting, albeit some small delay as usual and he said he felt some lag spikes here and there.

Had another test Glasgow to Glasgow. No freezing, but a few spikes once in a while. Games were fairly playable but there is still room for improvement.

quick report from Zero UK:
UK > Middle East (aria) 1 bar
London > Boston 2 bar
London > Portland (juiceboxabel) 1 bar
London > Belgium (kilam) 3 bars All
matches above 2 bars were good with host adv but laggy for client
Game still sometimes slows down near mid - end of matches but returns to normal between rounds.
Some weird spikes today - possibly heavy traffic congestion?
The netcode feels odd in general, not consistent
before, once you had gauged how laggy it was, you knew where you were and it was the same throughout the match.
now today, finding random matches with GOOD connections and then game will slow down or pause for a split second. ..
For 1 bar connections, it's laggy but it's smooth (for host) and well, it's one bar! It's good for what it is - playing a fighting game across the ocean...

BETA 4.1, 3 hours long session.
Reminder : Optical Fibre

4bar & host : offline perfect (against FR player mikkutaunter)
4bar & guest : very slight lag, very playable (visual hit confirms, proper combo links) - against FR & UK players
3bar & host : acceptable lag, still playable (can't react on short jumps, combos input must be performed in advance) - played against UK player
3bra & guest : same as host
under (tested 1 & 2 bar) : well, laggy of course.

Experienced very few micro freezes from time to time, but you guys are in the right path. Each build gets better & better. No disconnections, no trouble with Steam, good !
Kilam Aug 24, 2013 @ 5:03am
