"kofxiii.exe has stopped working" before it game even starts
I had this problem for a while. I would double click the game from steam and as soon as the game pops up with a block screen the error pops up. I tried opening the game directly from the game folder and the game wont even start from there. Does anyone have some sort of solution to this?

Have you tried disabling the Steam Overlay for it?

I just tried and it was no good. Could it have something to do with it being windowed?

Naw, it shouldn't affect it. When you say "you have been having this for a while" do you mean the game used to work before? Did you need to use any workarounds to get it to work in the past?

This same thread keeps poping up (I know because I've added to the pile) and the only answer that seems to come up is "have you done X on the checklist?" Its clear that many of us who were playing this game fine before the recent updates are now getting shut out. Wish we could get feedback from the devs or somebody in an actual position to offer a real solution to this.

The thing is, the last update came in November 29 and these problems started like early January, so it's more likely related to Steam or something else rather than the game itself.

Most of the reports say that they were unable to start the game after a Steam update released around 15th January (only update announced was released on 8th unless they are using the beta client). The problem is hard to reproduce (as the reason is unknown) and there is really little information about the problem, so it's hard to come up with a fix.

This crash happens to a small minority of players and some of them have needed to use workarounds like disabling Steam Overlay even before the Steam update, which hints that their system/software isn't exactly healthy.

Many (like myself) are only reporting these incidents now because they came back to/put the game aside until recently. The fact that there are several incidents (mine included) that state the game refuses to launch when the entire steam interface is avoided (attempting to start from the game folder directly) would indicate that the client cannot be blamed in many of these cases as it is never taken into the equation.
These issues are only "hard to reproduce" when data isn't gathered about them to make them reproducible and are only a "small minority" when compared to other users possibly experiencing similar issues who simply figure "welp, broken game on steam guess I'll move on." Heance my interest in somebody actually involved with the game making some positive steps to resolve what is certainly an issue of merit.

Attempting to launch the game directly from the executable has been disabled on purpose (for anti-piracy purposes, I suppose), so it's supposed to not work like that.

Jim sometimes adds people on Steam to troubleshoot with them when there is a new common problem, but the devs have normal work hours (UTC+09:00) and they are currently working on another game, so he can't help everyone in person. If you can provide the required information, I can poke him when I see him online.

If you can give me the crash log, it might be a great help. You can see crash logs with Windows Event Viewer under Windows logs -> Application.

Data isn't gathered when it's not submitted. Majority of bug threads only contain a description of the bug ("Game crashes on launch", "Characters are not visible" etc) which by itself isn't too helpful.

Problems with ntdll.dll can be caused by defects in hardware (RAM most of the time) or system files, but if this is the only program causing it, then it's probably in the memory allocation.

Are you running the game in some compatibility mode? Do you have some aggressive anti-virus program running in background? Are you running the game as an administrator? Right click the game executable (kofxiii.exe) and pick properties. Navigate to the compatibility page, choose "Change settings for all users" and tick the "Run as administrator" box (changing exe properties doesn't always work, need to be for all users).

Have you tried re-installing the game? Are you on normal Steam client or have you participated in the Beta client?

This is the ony program with this problem visible and the ram is brand new without defect. Program is not in compatibility mode and is set to run as admin on all (1) accounts. Standard, unmodified/non-beta Steam client, I think I'm up to my 6th reinstallation since this started in the first place.

Checked past threads and two other people have had ntdll.dll error (with same exception) fixed by running as an administrator for all users (By clicking the button in this picture[answers.sensorysoftware.com]).

Have you tried reinstalling Steam. You should be able to do it without much pain by deleting everything from your Steam installation folder except Steam.exe, steamapps folder (save this and you don't need to redownload your games) and userdata folder (saves located here).

This is getting rather ridiculous though. How could this program be written to such an extent to require an entire reinstallation of Steam to function?

Just finished reinstalling (steam) and I'm not aware it accomplished anything.
