Wargame: AirLand Battle

Is this game good for single player skirmishes only?
I don't have a ton of gaming time, and with the little one I often have to play in very small blocks 10-15 min here and there, so multiplayer isn't really viable for me.

Any thoughts?

It is not a bad game for a single player, if you are interested in the subject matter. The campaigns have 20 minute battles (pausable, but not saveable), and playing through them should give you your moneys worth.

Wargame EE has better single player campaigns, and allows saving in the middle of a mission. It is also cheaper, so that might be another option.

I understand the A.I. cheats terribly.

I had a lot of fun doing 2v2 & 3v3's skirmishes and such with me and the rest of the players as AI. It is true what the gentleman above says, the AI does seem to know where units are hiding and such but still great fun. I found when playing this mode that sometimes your AI team would play really bad depending on which deck they were and I had to spam heavy air strikes to hold back the enemy team. Other times they do play good and help out.

Overall, IMHO yes it is worth it for single player skirmish and I did find it very enjoyable. I had lots of fun and most of my play time was spent playing skirmish vs AI. If I wasn't playing the huge multiplayer battles, I was pretty much playing vs AI skirmishes almost exclusively.

Also if you have a buddy or two, very fun to co-op vs the AI as well. Me and my friend really enjoyed that a lot.

I prefer ALB's single player campaigns, mostly because I hate script driven missions. If you get into a battle with overwhelming odds, in ALB its because you did it to yourself. In EE, its because some dev decided an escort mission was acceptable content in any game, ever.

I have more fun in skirmish mode simply because its very customizable - you can build decks to fight the AI, you can build decks to fight multiple AI enemies. You can test your muliplayer decks to see how well they work before you get your ♥♥♥ handed to you because that deck didnt quite work the way you thought it would.

I'm happy with the purchase, though if you're leery, Spring Sale has gotta be coming soon. ALB will probably be on it simply to drum up interst in Red Dragon.

Yes, ALB skirmish vs AI (or two) is entertaining enough, not comparable to a game vs a nice opponent, but still ok. The ALB campaign soon gets very repetitive, though. In that sense the scripted EE campaigns bring variety.

Like so much else in ALB, and the whole series, the campaign shows great potential, but fails to execute it.

Once one learns how the AI works in ALB campaign, each battle becomes scripted in itself - deploy here to ambush, place these units there to get favorable exchange ratio,... it is always the same question, with only a couple of answers, over 50+ battles in the longest campaign.

...the AI likes to muster units here, so an arty barrage without intel will still succeed. But then again, most AIs are pretty stupid - and considering the fiction about when the AI isnt stupid, I think perhapse its better they remain predictable.
