Improved V1.01 Open Beta available - check it out!
Hi Everyone,

I want to assure you all that we’re very busy working on improving your experience with KOF ’98 UM FE. We have already made the following fixes in the public beta branch (password: “SleeplessCoders”):

CONTROLS:

* Though the half-circle inputs were authentic to the XBLA version of UM and we have a responsibility to respect the fine tuning that's gone into the game's 20 year legacy, many of you have consistently spoken up on this, so we've been able to change the UM input to be more forgiving like the NeoGeo version.

* We fixed support for direction hats on controllers that aren’t compatible with XInput.

* Keys may now be reassigned between Player 1 and Player 2 without having to clear them.

* There is now a CLEAR option in the CONTROLS menu which will clear the currently selected button. (Press [LP] when the button is highlighted, or click on the button and then click “CLEAR” on the bar at the bottom while it’s waiting for you to assign a new button.)

NETCODE:

* We have improved the handling of the traffic from Steam’s servers, which should greatly reduce the “spamming” traffic that was flooding your bandwidth and ultimately had been increasing your lag.

* We have shortened the input queue for online play. If you encounter a bad connection, the input delay will be capped. (The game will of course stall if no input is received.)

* We have switched the method for recovering from temporary input lag to one that should work better with systems on the lower end of the hardware spec range.

* Please note that since we've changed how the inputs work, beta users cannot be matched against main branch users. You will be able to invite between beta and main branch, but we don't advise it because it will definitely desync.

* We are working on further improvements (below) but didn’t want to you to wait on these fixes while we do.

GRAPHICS:

* We have added the option to turn off the border art (in GRAPHIC SETTING) as some people have requested.

* We fixed a Z sorting issue that caused some cosmetic glitches (e.g. in the main menu background)

* We haven’t seen the “offline frame skip” problem people have reported but we’ve made a change to how the game handles threading which should improve smoothness.

FOR THE TECHNICALLY INCLINED:

In a future update, we are intending to put a direct UDP version of the netcode in. The thought is if you and your opponent have the right UDP port open (shall we say 1998?) then after you’ve completed matchmaking the game will abandon the Steam transport and use UDP directly. We’ll have it say in the lobby whether you’ve established a UDP connection, so you’ll know you’ve got the best transport. We will also make UDP-only matches an option in matchmaking.

IN CLOSING…

We know there’s more work to do, but we want to assure everyone that we are listening. We hope you can see we’re already hard at work trying to make this a better game. Thanks everyone for your feedback and support!

LATEST UPDATE: the current build is now 479855. Right click on the game, select Properties, and look at the Local Files tab if you want to make sure you have the latest. The latest changes are:

* The Start button will now unpause pause menus.

Previous updates:

* The lobby will now tell you if your MAX INPUT DELAY has been adjusted because your opponent's setting is higher.

* The half-circle input changes have been fine-tuned further and restricted exclusively to those playing UM via keyboard

* The BORDER ART option now is just BORDER and has three choices: BLACK (to keep the aspect ratio in full screen, but not have border art), ART (to keep the aspect ratio in full screen and have border art) and NONE (to stretch the game to fill the screen in full screen). If you are playing windowed, NONE will remove the black on the left/right side of the window.

* A NETWORK SETTING menu has been added which allows you to adjust the MAX INPUT DELAY. Default is 9. The lower the number, the less input delay you'll experience but the game may slow down on a poor connection. The higher the number, the greater the delay, but the less likely slowdown will be.

* UM half-circle input code changed further, so it now works even more like NeoGeo.

* Your saved settings and progress will now carry over from 1.00

* We've removed the threading change for now as we suspect it's the cause of some people's problems launching the game. We'll investigate further before putting it back.

* Your controller will reconnect if you switch focus off the window and back onto it.

* SAME CHARACTER option now unlocked from the start.

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO JOIN THE BETA:

Right click on the game in your library, select Properties, select the Beta tab, and then key in the passcode "SleeplessCoders" (that's with a capital "S" and a capital "C") and then select "publicbeta" from the drop down above, and Close. It should queue the update, watch for it to complete. You may have to press "Play" before the download will start but you should definitely see the download progress.

If you aren't seeing it download, we've found that if you go into Properties->Local Files and click on Verify Integrity of Game Cache... you can nudge Steam into queuing the update immediately. You don't even have to let the verify complete. Just starting and cancelling it is enough. Then you'll see "- Update queued" next to the game. After that you should be able to download the update by right clicking or just attempting to Play.

Good thing you have beta now even after release. The game has suffered negative reviews because of this and would have avoided if there were any beta even just for those who preordered. Hopefully 2k2um will not suffer the same fate.

Well, I seem to be unable to launch the beta. I can opt in and download it, but when I try to run it I get "preparing to start KOF98UMFE..." Steam message and my state switches to in-game. I can see the KOF98 process running in the task manager, but it doesn't draw the window for it. Steam tries to keep launching the program and you get new "preparing to start KOF98UMFE..." message every few seconds.

But on paper these changes look great.

Sorry to hear that. One of the changes was a bit more fundamental, but not as critical to the improvements. (Specifically, the one that changed the threading model.) We suspect that may be the culprit. As we get more information on what you're experiencing and how widespread it is, we can always revert that particular change if need be. At it's 3:30AM (again) where we are, and we are indeed SleeplessCoders, we'll follow up in the morning. :)

I tried it on 3 computers. 2 which had the game installed previously and one which didn't. The only one which worked was the one that had a clear install of the beta branch. So the game's save file is probably not compatible with the beta (having new values such as whether the borders are enabled etc). Where's the save located?

I was able to update and run the game no problem, so I don't think it's the old files causing problems.

It was intended to be compatible -- we used old 1.0 save files all the while we made these changes -- but we may have missed something. The file is located here on a default install:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The King of Fighters'98 Ultimate Match\Data\~options.bin

Of course keep a copy of your old settings. Or better yet send them to us (you can use private messaging on our Support Forums at http://www.codemystics.com/forum) and we can see if we can fix it.

Just tested the beta, and HCF are still awful to do =(
DMs like Clark HCB x2 +A/C are impossible to do on keybord in 98 UM ( but ok on neogeo mode)
Oimetra Dec 19, 2014 @ 3:48am
@Miggoh I had the game already installed, installed beta with no errors at all.
Code Mystics  [developer] Dec 19, 2014 @ 3:48am
Just to let everyone know... if you want to confirm you've got the current beta build, as of this post it's build 478290.
Oimetra Dec 19, 2014 @ 3:53am
@CodeMystics were my previous settings and saves meant to be reset? Because they surely are not my old saves.

nevermind guys..my mistake on loop thing...downloading the beta now!
JohnXuandou Dec 19, 2014 @ 4:05am
So, I have NO idea why the half circles work in Neo Geo but not in default on keyboard, but it's definitely a keyboard specific issue, not what the game demands of a half circle. However, I do have a possible solution. If you want to fix half circles on keyboard, left and right need to cancel each other out. Left+right should be a neutral direction input, nothing basically. That will drastically clean up half circles on keyboard. As it is now, left+right gets you a left input, which complicates things on the roll.

It's not going to fix whatever voodoo is making half circles stricter in UM mode, but it shouldn't matter at that point.
