How does blocking work?

Defense I get, you simply take less dmg every hit, but how does the block Stat work?

depends on values , there is chance to deflect low,medium and high damage tiers . aim with mouse on parry stat in character screen to see values . you should be able to gain ivicibility with blood shirt high hp regen , def and parry more or less

As Lu2 said. The higher block you have, the higher the max damage you can block goes. There's 100% chance to block smaller values, and then a 50% chance for one 'medium' value (or less), and then a 20% for a larger chunk of damage.
A succesful block completely negates the damage you'd otherwise recieve. This is merely a 1 or 0 variable though. You either succeed and block it all, or take the full amount of damage. So no partial blocks.

I actually just did a Block run on Shield Maiden. The way I thought it worked was on flat damage. If you had 34 Block and the enemy does less than 34 damage, you'd block the attack and take no damage and I thought the reason I was still being hit was enemies had a chance to crit or something and I would get hit for more than my block value. Block was about as consistent as if enemies could only hurt me with the absolute hardest hits they could pull off. Regardless of how it actually works, it was fine once I had Block raised high enough nothing could really damage me except the big slime's and the bosses and I still managed to block some of the final boss too. Block is pretty strong.

Checks BEFORE defense. if the block value equals the unreduced damage of an attack, the chance to block is 50%. If the block value exceeds the damage by 4 times, the chance to block becomes 100%.

example
100 Block Strength
25 dmg or less 100% Block Chance
100 - 26 dmg 50% Block Chance
101 - 200 dmg 20% Block Chance

if you dont block, then will come the dmg reduction qith defense into play.
