I took the card from the giftshop at the start and got the shoplift achievement, then I turned around and took it back to the shop but nothing happened. I couldn't give it to the shop owner and dropping it did nothing..

you have to take it to the END of the Cave. It's ridiculous. That's why if you look at the global stats, there's a low percentage of people who have the acheivement.
Basically, you only have a character let go of the postcard for a little while if you're using another item. Or try not to solo with the character holding the postcard unless you're on that character's stage. You return to the Giftshop at the end of your journey ;D

I just got his achievement yesterday, can confirm that it's like that. However it's not so boring to achieve. I did it with the monk, the adventurer and the hillbilly. It was easy, also because it was not my first run, i knew exactly what to do to quickly skip the stages!

I got the achievement my first playthrough because I had the Knight always carry it when he wasn't carrying something important for the current puzzle. Of course I have a tendency of bringing a lot of items with me (Such as items that can be used in later puzzles to completely avoid areas of the game.

Just leave the post card somewhere where you can pick it up again when you are done with that particular level. ;D Sure you have to bring it with you the entire game, but it's not bad if you plan it right.

I tried doing this achievement but I didn't do it in one run and the post card had dematerialized when I loaded my save on the Island. :(
