Feature Request: Stay on Tray

In Microsoft Windows, when Steam is opened, it creates a Icon into System Tray, and when its closed, it wont keep any window opened, instead, it minimizes to system tray. until you go to Steam>Exit.

In linux, we have a software like Steam focused into indie, named Desura. if you close desura, it goes directly to system tray, like this: http://screencloud.net/v/zCyq and wont keep any window opened. having the same behaviour Steam in Windows has.

It is more pratical if stays on tray, and also takes less resources! (And its more beauty =P)

Can steam go to tray when closed and have a icon when opened on linux too?

It would require Valve to add some workarounds if they want to support anything more than Ubuntu + Unity. Gnome Shell has no application tray (most tray using apps in GS just use message tray for that purpose), Pantheon has no tray, some DEs may handle tray a bit different, etc. It's more work than you think.

Desura supports almost all linux distros and uses tray, why valve cant do that too?

Shouldn't we request that the icon ALWAYS be in the tray? Not just when you close the window?

That's the behavior on windows.

Totally, not sure if the only one, but if I start the game directly without opening the steam client and cancel the game start then I don't have a way to get the opened instance of the client and I have to kill the process...

That's a must. Some "classic" DEs, like XFCE have the classic window buttons at the bottom of the screen, and having Steam open takes a lot of place.

Applications are aware if there's an active systray or not (try killing xfce4-panel when pidgin is in the tray: the main window appears and closing that window only minimizes the window (just like the current Steam client). However, as soon as I restart xfce4-panel, I can close the main window, and only the tray icon remains.).

What about having a 'tick mark' in the Steam > Settings Menu so that it will run in the system tray if needed, but not by default.
