Serious Sam 3 freezing and Xid errors
Very often the game freezes completely for about 10 seconds. This only happens in-game and not in the menu. Freezing is more frequent in certain places. So far, it's been worse in the tunnels in "The Silent Riddler". There, it freezes about every 5 seconds, and is completely unplayable. During the freeze, the music stops, but the background noise (e.g. wind) keeps playing.

Sometimes, after if freezes the graphics will be more or less messed up (invisible monsters, broken triangles extending into infinity). In the kernel log, I *sometimes* get an Xid error when the freeze happens (at least it seems so):

NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 8, Channel 00000005

I should note that SS3 so far has been the only game freezing like that and producing these Xid errors. Team Fortress 2 works perfectly, and so do some non-Steam games (Warzone 2100, 0 A.D., Quake 3).

Suspecting hardware problems and overheating, I've done some stress tests but have seen no problems. In particular, I've been running gpu_burn (http://wili.cc/blog/gpu-burn.html) which does a GPU stress test using CUDA, for 1 hour, and I've also tried fully loaded the CPU while gpu_burn is running. During this test, the GPU temperature reaches 81C, which is far greater than when playing Serious Sam 3 (65C).

This is output from the Steam and the game; it doesn't print out anything when freezing occurs:

Recent Failure Reports:
Problems with overheating would not be the first. We often see that SS3 (and our previous games) can crash or lockup the GPU or CPU when overburn tools cannot. Guess we are just very performance-hungry. :)

There are several ways to test that theory:
- Run at lower settings.
- Use VSync and/or gfx_iMaxFPSActive to limit the framerate (beware, in case you are using that, you should make sure that powersaving is disabled, otherwise the governor can decide to downclock the CPU causing even worse issues.
- Open the case and blow a domestic desktop fan into the motherboard/GPU.
Can you try adding the following options to your Xorg config under the Screen section

Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x3322; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1" Option "UseEvents" "false"
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried all of them, here are the results:

- Reducing the performance settings from (CPU,GPU,Memory)=(Ultra,High,High) to (Medium,Medium,Medium) *does* seem to completely fix it.
- Limiting the frame rate using gfx_iMaxFPSActive (to 40 or even 20fps) does not fix it or even make it less frequent. Without limit, in the most affected place (tunnels in Silent Riddler) the FPS is around 80. I did disable CPU powersaving (cpufreq-set -r -g performance).
- The desktop fan doesn't help, even after it's been blowing for 15 minutes.
- The Xorg options don't help (I put them in Device section not Screen, figured that's where they need to go. I've verified in the Xorg log they were indeed picked up by the driver).
Further, it is sufficient to only set GPU Speed to Medium to fix the freezing; the CPU/Memory can remain on Ultra/High.
Seems some specific feature in the driver or hardware is broken, and that feature is only enabled on high settings. You may want to try manually changing each setting to see which one it is. You can get the list by diffing these two files:

Content/SeriousSam3/Config/GPU-QL3.cfg
Content/SeriousSam3/Config/GPU-QL4.cfg

Most probable are those variables that are toggles or choices (i.e., where settings are 0/1/2/3, etc). Those that adjust some floating point numbers or texture/buffer sizes are less likely to be of issue here, but I wouldn't completely discount those.
Since yesterday's update, I've encountered this problem a lot (with all symptoms, the freezes, the artefacts, the Xid errors) on Ubuntu 13.04 (x86), to the point where it's unplayable (after 1 minute or less). I doubt that this is due to pushing the machine too hard, it also happens when I switch all performance settings to Lowest.

On Ubuntu 12.10 (x64), I used to encounter this bug once in a while but the game have been running pretty much flawlessly since the couple last updates.

Both Ubuntus are on the same machine, using the same game files, on Ubuntu 13.04, I've also tried the 313 Nvida driver and running the game in OpenBox.

I'd also like to point out that I tried running the latest version of Unigine benchmark and it hung with pretty much the same symptoms (image freeze but sound continues in the background) so this may not be related to Serious Sam 3 (the fact that SS3 runs very well on 12.10 seems to confirm this). I also doubt it's related to demanding to much to the GPU because I've been playing a lot of RAGE on 13.04 (using Wine) without a single crash.

Even if it's probably not related to Serious Sam, there is still a severe bug keeping the game from being played on the soon to be released Ubuntu version. If I can provide more info to help fixing this, please ask.

Edit : Screenshot of artefacts are visible in my screenshot gallery (game running in lowest quality)
http://steamcommunity.com/id/strycore/screenshots/

UPDATE: Turns out my power supply wasn't delivering enough power for my GPU. I unplugged some hard drives and I didn't experience any freezes since then.
