ATI Radeon HD4870 Drivers
Hey all,

Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere, I couldn't find any reference to it. I have an ATI Radeon HD4870 and have been trying to get Ubuntu 12.10 drivers for it -- without them, the GPU temperature reaches 70-80oC.

I don't have any additional drivers in my setting system -- which is how I addressed the drivers for my laptop. I found a manual installation page, but following it led to me losing all visual drivers of any kind (no windows, sidebars etc) and had to uninstall.

Does anybody have any tips or has anybody managed to get HD4870 drivers working on Ubuntu?

Cheers

You mean Proprietary Drivers. The best way to do it, is downloading the beta drivers directly from AMD's website.
I'm not sure how's AMD doing with their legacy drivers, but regular ones seem to break unity as well in 13.04, the only way is using beta drivers.

No, only U 12.04 is supported, you need the 13.1 LEGACY drivers. Not many games will run with it. Serious Sam 3 does not, Team Fortress 2 would run, but not really fast.
Before you going to try proprietary drivers (fglrx) I recommend you go to FOSS driver (that you already use) route instead.

Lower GPU clock: http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature#KMS_Power_Management_Options (run this commands under "sudo -i" or put it to /etc/rc.local)
If it gives you better temperature, upgrade to 13.04 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RaringUpgrades and try some games.

Actually, nowadays not even 12.04 - since 12.04.2 the CDs ship with the Kernel and X Server of 12.10, both are not being supported by the Legacy driver. The original Kernel and X Server from pre .2 CD images are still supported separately by Canonical, though, so using an older image to install 12.04 would be a possibility.

Proprietary Drivers do NOT support HD4xxx cards

There is no huge deal to patch the legacy driver up to kernel 3.9. I packaged it for wheezy in the Kanotix Dragonfire repo and it works. Only the xserver is a hard requirement.
