Steam Ubuntu Failure
So I have an Ubuntu boot that I want to eventually make permanent, so I need to get games working well on it....
Was watching a video from linux gamer, and while following it was to turn on the beta. This is a fairly recent video... So I did so.... Then I noticed there was no need for that.... so I opted back out after it finished updating and restarting.... And the opt out restart/update process landed us here...
No amount of :
1.reinstalls
2. downright deleting,
3. libnss
4. apt-get upgrade steam
or anything else I've found has fixed it... still getting the same error when I try to run it. Here's the output on terminal:

Running Steam on ubuntu 18.04 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically Unpack runtime failed, error code 2 Error: Couldn't set up the Steam Runtime. Are you running low on disk space? Found out the a reinstall wasn't working because of the hidden files steam uses not getting deleted with apt-get remove or apt-get remove --purge for some reason

You can completely uninstall Steam, remove remaining files, and reinstall Steam like so:

sudo apt purge steam
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt autoclean
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

rm -r ~/.steam
rm -r ~/.local/share/Steam

sudo apt install steam

(I'm assuming your system already has 32-bit support and the multiverse repo enabled)

You could install all these 32-bit libraries as well.

The reason is that the package management system will never touch a user's home folder. The user with the precious documents in their home folder may not be the same user that's mucking about with the package manager.

These are the Steam files in your home folder:

rm -r
rm -r ~/.local/share/Steam

Installing from the repositories puts the settings in ~/.steam. Installing using the .deb file puts the settings in ~/.local/share/Steam. Or maybe the other way round. That's the difference there, anyway.
With regards to the libraries you're missing, I believe they are part of the Steam runtime: a standardised (and sometimes out of date) set of libraries included with Steam to give games a basic level of functionality that's guaranteed to be there.

You can either install from a source that includes the Steam runtime or install system-wide versions of those libraries (the 32-bit versions, as noted in your error message) and tell Steam not to use the runtime. Either approach should work. I understand that at some point some distributions had the runtime in a separate package.

Hi folks, just wanted to tell that this complete uninstall totally solved my problem with the missing files/libraries. In my case I already could play with Steam on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS but suddenly the error occured without me knowing why. I tried several solutions, but none worked. After deleting everything with the commands given by Rogue it started again! (I did not have the folder "~/.local/share/Steam")

Thank you!!!

Thank you! I had the same problem as OP and this is the only fix I could find that works.
