This happens with me also

I think I'm getting the same bug. Also running an AMD card (Radeon HD 6790). However, I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 running KDE/Kwin.

Here's what the terminal spits out:
ExecSteamURL: "steam://open/friends"
*** glibc detected *** /home/dmitri/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam: corrupted double-linked list: 0x0cc0b088 ***

I was able to reproduce a similar bug with Compiz, but the terminal didn't return anything. However, in Metacity there was no bug, at least for me.

Sorry, nevermind about Compiz reproducing the bug; It was a result of the desktop enviornment coping with my changing the window manager. Steam seemed to run fine, I just couldn't interact with it at all until I changed the window manager back to Kwin. The bug only seems to occur in Kwin for me.

Espion, based on your System Information, it seems that you are not running the latest version of the client.
From the client, click Help and then About Steam. You should see a date, representing when your client was built. This date should be around the 28th or 29th of November. You can force an update check by clicking Check for Steam Client Updates..., from the top-level Steam menu.
