What do I do when Steam stops responding?

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that Steam for Linux becomes unresponsive when it's concentrating really hard on downloading something, just like the Windows version. Only... what do I do now? I can't find whatever Kubuntu's equivalent of the Windows Task Manager is, and I'm not sure simply force-terminating the process is the proper response in this case either.

I dont think there is one
pstree -p |grep main
this should show main thread processes.
kill them by kill -9 $PROCESS NUMBER. should be it.
i simply use gnome system monitor for that. for GUI

The steam process is called MainThrd, so you can do:

killall MainThrd

No need to use -9 unless the program is not responding to signals (ie try just kill first, or killall as Nevon suggested)

You can also use a gui task manager for this, kde has one that is launched with crtl+esc, I think gnome/unity also do this though I am not sure.
