I'm running Mint 14 64 bit with Cinnamon. I saved a command line output from when I tried to install Braid if it would be of any help to the team.
Yes, VVVVVV and Killing Floor (although Killing Floor has a build available I've not seen an update in the weeks I've had it installed; I've come to the conclusion that it's being worked on behind closed doors for the meantime).
I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 with an nvidia 650M optimus setup and originally bought Limbo through the HIB. The version I downloaded from there has never worked on my setup due to some wine errors (note: Limbo is not a native Linux port but instead a WINE bottle) about shader model 3.0 support being required. I've since completely uninstalled it (aptitude remove --purge and rm'd the local content in .config) and tried installing it via Steam last night. I don't get the WINE error, but it still doesn't run for me. I'm assuming it's the same problem I had with the HIB version.
I'm not having any problems with my HIB version of Braid, but I'll uninstall it now and try it out from Steam, see if it barfs on me in some way similar to what you're seeing.
Follow-up: Less joy than expected. With Limbo I'm still setting a popup that says "invalid app config", when I went to install Braid it immediately popped back saying it was ready to play, so I clicked the play button and got "missing executable". Time to clean up the system a bit, I think.

If I right-click the game, click "Properties" -> "Local files" -> "Browse local files...", I see an empty folder at ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Dwarfs
I've tried deleting local game content and re-downloading, but no change.
If I right-click the game, click "Properties" -> "Local files" -> "Verify integrity of game cache...", it thinks for a minute and tells me "All files successfully validated."
If I right-click the game, click "Properties" -> "Betas", I can select "dwarfsbeta -", but it needs a password. Entering a blank password results in "Password check failed. Please retype the password and try again."

You can tell if it's going to do this before completing the install procedure. When the window pops up after clicking "INSTALL" Steam will say "You are about to install xyz." but the lines stating Disk space required/available as well as estimated download time are missing.
I will also note a minor capitalisation issue. "Disk space required:" vs "Disk space Available:" Never noticed if it's that way or not under Windows as I've never had an install issue before. ><
So far for me the games listed in here are the only ones I've had which will download the required binaries. I'd say if the game isn't listed there, don't count on it working :)
