Error running Apps directly
I'm having problems running games directly from the terminal while steam is running. This may be because of my setup since I'm running steam on Fedora rather than Ubuntu but i thought I'd report what I'd found. (By the way I was attempting to do this as a way of recording some of the game issues i'd had and normal recording software such as ffmpeg just isn't capturing it.)

When attempting to run World Of Goo I got

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to locate a running instance of Steam, or a local steamclient.dll.

And I realised that I needed steam to be running first! So I tried it with steam running.

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; no appID found. Either launch the game from Steam, or put the file steam_appid.txt containing the correct appID in your game folder.

So I put the AppID (as best I could tell for the demo, 22010) in steam_appid.txt in the world of goo folder installed by steam.

Oh well!

Tried the same with Serious Sam 3 and failed in a different way. Running the Serious Sam 3 executable produces the same output whether Steam's running or not.

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; SteamAPI_IsSteamRunning() failed. [S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to locate a running instance of Steam, or a local steamclient.dll.

So I tried debugging it and produced this:

Unfortunately I'm not sure it tells me anything.

try this:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/.steam/bin ~/Steam/SteamApps/common/Serious\ Sam\ 3/Bin/Sam3

What it says: the steamapi library shipped with games has no awareness of steam lib install locations on the system. Would be nice to have it fixed. :(

johndrinkwater, nice one. That's exactly right.
