Steam Crashes on ingame voicechat (solved)
While I'm playing a game, the game will eventually hang and sound will repeat. At first I thought the game was at fault, but every time I removed the game from the main view, steam was not showing up. I'd xkill the game and restart it.

Steam doesn't seem to be crashing normally, only when I'm playing games, The game I was playing (only one I've played so far on steam for linux) is guns of icarus online. I have to xkill the game and restart it.

I'm running linux mint 15 "Olivia" with Cinnamon UI. It's a fresh install.

I haven't modified any packages to accommodate steam. Do I need to? if so what packages?

there are two proposed solutions, start with 1. If that doesn't work go to 2.

1. go to the steam settings, then voice, then click on change device, then choose the specific device (should look something similar to "HDA ATI SB [HDA Generic] (hw:0,0) via ALSA")

2. Disable PulseAudio and run ALSA by itself.

Check load temperatures and run memtest86.

you have no idea what you're talking about. Please don't jump to conclusions.

I know what it is and I'm not the only one. It's the damn voice chat. Ran Guns of Icarus with voice chat off, steam didn't crash (steam is crashing, not guns of icarus, I figured that out when steam kept on restarting after I xkilled guns of icarus) I played several matches with no crashing. Before with voice chat on, it was once or twice a matches.

Did your client close after the crash and the game was still open?

Did you install graphics drivers? The open-source ones can cause some issues in rare cases. It sounds very much like an overheating issue.

It's not an overheating issue wouter. It was just fine when I turned voice chat off, but immediately started crashing with voice chat on.

Junior: The steam client was closed but the game was still up, however the game was frozen and the sound was repeating itself (and it keeps on repeating even if I restart the client and the game, but that's not a big deal)

If it was an overheating issue with my video card, it wouldn't just hang, I would see artefacts on my screen, and I did not see them. Also this will happen when I've been playing the game for 20 minutes. This is a good airflow case, I built it, it is better than my last build (but has the same video card) as far as heat management and my last build LASTED LONGER. I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN IT'S NOT HEAT! now I understand the drivers overtaxing the card but it has been just fine with other games not using voice chat and guns of icarus not using voice chat.

I have read that other people have had problems with voicechat on other games (such as TF) as well as voice chat in the chatrooms. Guns of Icarus runs through steams system for a connection. Steam governs the voice chat.

as for the drivers, linux mint for whatever reason won't let me use different ones, everytime I switch it switches back and now it won't even let me switch. I'm not too worried about that, unless I want my second screen to work.

to get a good sense of what I mean here's an example from some testing I did

Played guns of icarus without voice chat for over 2 hours until I got tired of not having voice chat

Played it again with voice chat and lasted about 20 minutes or less

it is NOT! NOT! the graphics drivers! let's move on... please, I like voice chat and I want to use it, not use it and uselessly hope I don't crash

I opened an issue on Github about this, exactly like 20-30min of gaming the client closed and the game is still open. For me then I receive messages like "A connection to VAC servers could not be made" (of course because the client closed)
Freelance Bum 29/jun/2013 às 22:20
I'm not seeing that exact message, but I don't think I'm using VAC with Guns of Icarus Online.
Yeah, the client closed on voice chat for you it seems after reading that github issue report

at least they're looking into it. I'm wondering if there's any work around or a package I can install or anything i can do to get this to work with voice chat.

VALVe seems to be doing NOTHING on this bug, as well on the bug that make Steam go crazy on encrypted /home folders. I had to create a new thread on the same subject (this game crash) so that they supposedly assign on that one.

The one about encrypted /home

The one about this issue you/me described (originally not given attention)

Dup of the above since nobody gave an answer

This worked

I disabled/removed (they both work, kind of wishing I had just disabled it) pulse-audio and just used Alsa. Voicechat no longer crashes steam

this is a workaround, not a fix, valve is supposedly working on it, apparently this is a known problem with steam and pulse-audio

Don't go over the top by disabling or removing PA just use these last workarounds. In a nutshell that is picking your specific ALSA device in the Steam voice options.
Freelance Bum 4/jul/2013 às 3:11
Disabling PA worked and putting pulse audio back is not difficult with my distro. In fact, I did it in less than 10 minutes after this post (this is an edit)

Also DerRidda I really do appreciate the post. Where were you DAYS AGO when the people above (with questionable intelligence) were spouting that it was an overheating issue. :(

My only complaint is that it didn't come sooner.
