Frequent Stuttering in TF2 Ubuntu 12.10 .32bit
Every 5-10 seconds I get a big stutter where nothing happens and then I get jolted back to where I should be. It wasn't always like this. I had frame issues after install and then I started passing -dxlevel 81 from launch options. I am using experiemental Nvidia 310 drivers on my GeForce 210 card.

I know its not a compatibility issue because it was working so great before. I noticed that my ping shoots up from 40ish to 300-1000 during these spikes. I am on N mode wifi and I get a solid 5ms to my router and 40ms to google.ca otherwise. I manually configured the interface so there is no network manager or other somesuch thing involved.

I have tried maxframes cfg, some FPS Banana tweaks and none stopped this hitching.
What puzzles me is that it was working so well at first and then this cropped up.

My packages are all up to date. I also play Killing Floor with no such difficulties. I suspect this is a glitch in source!

Is anyone else in the same boat?

I can't test wired due to logistical circumstances. Also, the issue only began in the last 48 hours. I was playing on the same WiFi as before no problem. FYI: I do not use Network Manager or Wicd or anything else for that matter, I have manually configured my interface.

I did notice some improvement if I ran "watch sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" in a terminal while playing but eventually the stutters resumed anyway.
I am having this same issue. Every 5th fight it studders like it is loosing connectivity but my ping shows 50 to 80 range. I have Ubuntu 12.04 64bit running on an Alienware m11x Duo. Most games run fine and my FPS for TF2 is over 60. Not sure what the issue is. Perhaps it is the wifi but nothing else does this.

Do you have the same issue in training mode too ?
If you do, the multicore option in advanced graphics settings may be the problem.
type in terminal:
mtr serveradressyouplaytf2on
MTR is network diagnosting tool (mix of traceroute and ping), you can check if you got any packet loss and at which hops.

It's installed by default in Ubuntu, but in case you don't have it, look for mtr-tiny in software center or type in terminal:
sudo apt-get install mtr-tiny

EDIT: If your framerate drops below tickrate in Source Engine games (it's 33 by default in tf2 I think and 66 in cs:s... tho it may be set to 66 by server or you), you may lose packets which results in lag, heavy stuttering and increased ping.

I have multicore disabled already. And no, nothing wrong in training mode not stutter. I did the MTR command to one of my favourite servers as directed and nothing seems to glare out from the statistics. I had 7% packet loss at first but then it smoothed out to 3% doesn't seem bad enough to account for the stutter.

EDIT:Tomorrow I will be setting up a spare router I have lying around with dd-wrt in client mode and connect vie wire to it to maybe eliminate the NIC I am using.

Okay folks, I have located the problem. I am now connected with what is a pseudo-wired connection. I have a ASUS RT-N13U DD-WRT'd router in client mode connected to my LAN port which I am managing with Wicd.

Now that I am bypassing my ASUS PCE-N15 Wifi NIC and the linux kernel's rtl8192ce drivers I am experiencing near perfect connectivity in TF2. There are litte baby jitters and they are few and far between, something I consider characteristic of WiFI.

I will try to compile the Vendor driver (ASUS) and the manufacturer's driver (RealTek) soon and compare their performance. If anyone with this issue has a spare router lying about I fully reccomend giving DD-WRT a try at least untill there is a solution to the poor performance of the rtl8192ce

I can definitely attest to this with my own PCE-N15. Playing with tons of bots couldn't be smoother, but as soon as the Realtek chipset has do some work with TF2, seems like I get the stutters when my team needs me most.

I currently am using the Realtek drivers compiled for the RTL8192CE (or RTL8188, whatever it wants to call itself). Seems better than what "firmware-realtek" gives me in Debian, but still people will accuse me of teleporting and other nonsense.

Might as well go for the actual ASUS ones at this point. Also, using Liquorix 3.7 kernel but doubt it matters given the obvious culprit.
Oh, wait. The ASUS ones won't compile on my 3.7. Probably already tried that...
